Arrested Development series thread - NEW SEASON

The season started out slow but really starts to take off around episode 10 or so. It reminds me of Burn After Reading in that the early part is the setup for a great payoff down the road. It seems tailor made to watch in binge fashion.

I think the worst part of it so far is that after seeing five episodes, it all seems to take place during the same time period. So, you tend to get a lot of repeated stuff from a different vantage point.

Yeah, it's all leading up to the maritime court case.

I was unaware that the 'follow a character' thing was going to last all fifteen episodes. It will probably get a little old.

I remember commenting at the start of like the third episode, 'boy, they really went full Guy Ritchie on this, didn't they?'

I watched 6 episodes.... So good!
It definitely 100% gets better as you watch. I thought the Fantastic 4 episode was awesome (I think ep. 5) Laughed my ass off.

I am so glad there are new episodes.... <3

One of the best shows ever on TV for sure.

The George Michael and Maeby episodes towards the end are on fire. George Michael in Spain might be the funniest 45 seconds of the season.

Releasing the whole thing all at once makes no sense

I would figure they're kind of looking at it as a 'loss leader' to get people in the door. Yeah, they could get 4x the subscription fees by releasing one a week...but someone signing up JUST to watch Arrested Development would be a lot less likely to go for that. And those already using Netflix probably aren't planning on cancelling after they finish watching the new episodes.

The net gain is however many people they 'hook' and maintain as subscribers. Kinda smart when you think about it.

Same reason HBO runs shows one after another instead of spanning them out over a year.

I watched the first two episodes last night, and as much as I hate to say it, they just weren't anywhere near as funny as the original. I'm hoping it gets better, but when you release all the episodes at once you don't get a chance to do any audience sampling and tuning.

Am I too early to see the "It's not as good as the originals" posts that always flood opinions of shows when they come back, or do I need to wait a bit longer?

I felt the same way, but by Episode 4 it was back for me.

It built momentum and by the end I really enjoyed it and laughed a fair amount. I liked some of the new recurring jokes they added.

I don't feel like I missed as much in each episode as I did in the original series. There seems to be a bit less going on rapidly. But the structure of the season is so clever that I still will find a lot of enjoyment re-watching.

The George plot lines were by far the weakest. I don't understand what they were going for there.

I thought face blindness was a funny illness they made up. Then my wife told me it's real and Brad Pitt recently declared that he is fairly certain he has the condition. Suddenly those scenes are a lot funnier!

I really enjoyed all of the Ron Howard jokes.

Yeah, I know someone with face blindness. I watched the show laughing at that guy. And then I saw that guy I know with face blindness and I was like, "Woah... is that how he really sees things? Wait, no. He recognizes me. How does this work again...?"

face blindness

who are these people, without cheating?
