My Seagate 400GB was not in good condition as advised by S.M.A.R.T. and Seagate shipped me with brand new 750GB with new Perpendicular technology. I decided to restore everything using Acronic True Image I follow the step to step instructions the restoration process worked great except that new 750GB becomes 400GB how do I get full 750GB?

This is my first time restore to HD. Any help will be great apprecite.

Fixed.

When you did the image you may have selected the wrong option and had it image the entire hard drive partition as is(if that makes any sense). Now, what happens if the option is wrong, I think, is that the entire 400GB partition is copied over to 750gb and it ignores the entire 750gb partitino.

I'm at a loss of words to explain that this morning. FYI, I have the same problem when imaging 100GB laptop drives to 80GB drives. There should be a way to fix it, i"ll see if I can't find it specifically for Acronis, as I have just purchased 150 licenses for the software.

Acronic, aronic, lol! I love it!

Nice little upgrade on the hard drive btw. The only way you'll be able to change the partition size is with something like Partition Magic. Though I do believe there is a setting in TrueImage to actually use the entire volume space instead of the volume is backed up. But I haven't tried it.

If you can't get it to work properly, you can mount the image of the drive that you made (Acronis has a built in virtual drive) then just copy everything over. You may need to reformat/repartition your 750G drive prior to this though to make sure it opens up all 750GB.

No there shouldn't be any need for a reformat. I've done the same thing you did. Used Acronis to back up a drive. Installed said drive (much larger one) and restored the image. Yes sometimes the drive may seem to be smaller but there are disk managers that will help. Someone mentioned partition magic which is ok. The problem I have with partition magic is if none of my other drives are formated or partitioned using partition magic they come up withe errors.

(Assuming you have already restored your image and looking to unlock the rest of the drive)

So go to linux. . . Download the Distro: Ubuntu 6.10 ISO (you can google it and find it). Burn it to a cd and boot the computer up with it. It will take you to a pseduo windows like desktop. Go to the top tab and look for Gnome:Disk Manager/Partitioner. It will then give you a detailed look at your drive. Assuming your drive is larger than the installed image, the left over space is greyed out. Simply add a partition or extend an existing one. The process is fast and easy. Best of all its free . . .

TrueImage 10.4942 is the latest build. It is fully AOK in Vista. PartitionMagic will not work in Vista, and it is not necessary any longer. Vista has built in Disk Management Shrink and Expand functions - they work just fine.

Instead of using backup and restore, I would have simply booted using the TrueImage user-prepared, bootable CD, and cloned the 400 to the 750 using PROPORTIONAL data transfer. That would have automatically expanded your partition to the full 750 or whatever. Cloning requires no restoration.

If you are running XP, then Partition Magic is probably the best bet to expand your active partition to the full 750. It's really a simple task. Again, best done OUT of Windows using P/M's bootable CD.

I take it I have to buy Partition Magic?
