Hold on a minute... since they're illigal, why does it matter if they can get a license or not? The minute they get caught, they get a free bus ride to TJ, so what good is a damn driver license gonna do? By granting them a license, does it make them "legal"? And since they're not legal, even if they got insurance (by any company who would be stupid enough to sell them insurance), by what legal system would they go by?, they're not even citizen or legal residents of this state, or country. So, what makes you think that the insurance would pay (that is if they get insurance).
The decision to repeal this stupid law is right on the money, not only it saves the DMV a lot of needed resources and time for the legal residents and citizens, but I'm damn tired of the long lines every fcuking time I go there (imagine how longer the line will be). Some of you might say that this law might save lives, by giving them a license and having tests administered in Spanish so they can learn and obey the traffic laws. The last time I check, this is the United States of America, not Mexico.

These people aren't going anywhere, and to deport all of them would be difficult and bordering on unhumanitarian (splitting up families, sending them back to possibly NOTHING, etc.) I have a 3 step approach to solving the problem:
1. Close the damn borders and stop making the problem worse!
2. Change the laws on getting naturalized. Make it easier in some aspects, but harder in others. Basic knowledge skills and stuff - reading, at least rudimentary English.
3. Get the people who are already here naturalized. If they don't pass the above mentioned test, out you go!
Once they're naturalized, they'll pay taxes and their wages will have to increase, which means cost of living will increase, etc. But that's how it works, it's a free market, and their wages were artificially low to begin with. Eventually it will all balance out, because that's how a free market economy works. The invisible hand balances everything out on its own.

All I had to do to register to vote was fill out a form stating I was a citizen and provide a driver's license number. So, you lie on a form and provide an accepted form of ID. Who would know or bother checking it? Yup, he's got a driver's license and he signed the form...must be a citizen.
I haven't heard a single arguement to persuade me that even one illegal would go out and buy insurance for their car simply because they were granted a driver's license. That is like saying 2+2=198.
People don't come here from Europe and need a driver's license to be able to drive here legally...
I even know a few Canadians who came here and actually drive cars in this country without a CA driver's license. How can this be? How can they get insurance? Another stupid argument...

Since 1996, millions of illegal immigrants have flooded into the country and have been illegally employed and helped our economy to get where it is. You can?t just shut people down all of a sudden because you think it?s time to. It should be gradual, or part of a larger plan that keeps all parties happy. These people work harder than average, do undesirable jobs and are underpaid. We needed them, and now we?re dissing them.
In my opinion, it?s unfair to only the longtime illegal immigrants who have tax IDs and have been consistant tax payers, but I also agree that something had to be done.

Yeah the DMV looses money on each license. They also loose money on license plates. They also loose money on gas tax. They also loose money on the sales tax. They also loose money on the smug test. They also lose money from inspection. They also loose money on the income the illegal employer can't declare as a write of and so has to pay more taxes then if the person was legal.

Tennessee gives Driver's Licenses to Illegals and Georgia is planning to do the same thing next month.
They have automatic "Motor Voter" Laws so if you have a License you automatically get to vote.
So that makes them a "Illegal Citizen". All the benefits of being a Citizen without having to pay any Taxes.
I say we all go to Mexico become "Legal Mexicans" and come back to the U.S. as "Legal Illegal Citizens" Tax Free!!!

Regarding that Tennessee Law:
Is all that is required to vote is having a valid driver's license, or do you have to have a car registered, insured and be paying excise tax.. etc?

The INS should work with ahhhhnuld to put that law back in place and just put INS offices in every DMV station. They can have their driver's licenses - they just won't be around to drive. If properly executed, it will thin the SoCal herd very quickly. Perhaps offer them full licenses immediately? No driver's education and provisional licenses. No vision tests or anything. Just show up and get a driver's license (and deported)
Illegal immigrants CAN pay taxes, using something called an individual tax ID. This was implimented in 1996 SPECIFICALLY to allow illegal immigrants to pay taxes easer. Millions have signed up for this. Also, sales and property taxes are paid automatically by immigrants everytime they pay for something.
In actuality, your average illegal immigrants contributes more to the government in taxes then he or she gets from the government. Because of their status they cannot recieve many of the government services their taxes or supposed to be paying for. This stastic is a hard cold fact.
Anyone who says "Send them back to Mexico in a big freakin truck" is just a bigot. Unless youre pure blooded native american, one of your ancestors was an immigrant.

it's really funny to see some of you bashing ahhnuld for repealing a ridiculous law. as some already mentioned, this is not a problem that can be solved in one night. the law itself is ridiculous, because of the lack of fingerprinting and ability for law enforcement to track people down. TERRORISTS (not illegal) can easily exploit this and endanger our national security. stick to the discussion of repealing the law and create another thread about illegal immigration if you wish.

The illegal immigrant driver's license was one of the stupid things in my opinion. Driving is not a right, and to provide DL to people who are here illegally is insane. I heard on the news people talking about "They need to be able to drive to work" or "They need to be able to drive their kids to school" that is nothing but BS, use public transportation, go thru the proper channels to become a legal immigrant, then you can get a DL. It is that simple...
I always thought that the Driver License to Illegal Aliens thing was an INS / Immigration trap anyway. First they give you a license, then they know where you live, then the repeal the Driver License, and now they know where you are to come haul your butt back to Mexico (or China where it cost $30,000 for the illegal trip anyway).

That law is retarded. The way I see it is that the US isn't trying nearly hard enough to deport illegals or protect or borders.
