What do you mean "if you want to keep your full-time job"? Last I remembered it was illegal to be fired because of conflicts with military service.
It's illegal to fire an employee due to military obligations, but there are always ways of getting around that. Do you honestly expect an employer to support an employee who's going to be gone at least once every weekend, two to three weeks for their annual training, and then at least a year for their deployment? Lots of people forget we are a Nation at war, and employers have businesses to run.

I have yet to see ANY employer get away with terminating a Reserve soldier who gets deployed. They would get FRIED in court and in the press if they did so.
My Reserve job often takes me away for schools and extra days beyond the normal drill schedule (several extra weeks per year!), and I've never had a problem with any company I've ever worked for.
In fact, if you get deployed, they are legally obligated to give you any payraises you would have earned had you stayed. They are also legally obligated to promote you as you would have been promoted had you stayed. And finally, upon your return, they are obligated to bring you on-board within a set period of time and pay you - EVEN IF YOUR JOB SLOT NO LONGER EXISTS! The list of USERRA protections is long... go read it for yourself and try to ignore the forum lawyers around here.
