The Berreta M9 aka 92FS (9mm) replaced the Colt 1911 (.45) in 1985 as the standard Army sidearm.
(The 1911 was the standard sidearm from 1911-1985  )

30yr life cycle of the Beretta is up.
Instead of buying more M9's, the Army decided to opt for a new weapon to address design weaknesses.

but Why werent these design weaknesses caught in the 1980s before awarding the contract to Berreta?

I like SIGs, my 320 shoots nice, but still think they should have kept it simple and gone with Glock. This sidearm replacement program took way too friggin long, cost DoD and taxpayers way too much.

The CMP started doing some 1911's, they may start pushing some of these out.
Friend, retired Major and currently runs the county veterans affairs, said he'll keep an eye out but it may be a year and the current admin might just grind them up though...:(

Your friend drinks the GQP/NRA Koolaid then maybe. Serviceable military firearms no longer issued are generally given or sold to allies, then the CMP. I could see them being sent to the CDD crusher if they were SMGs or full auto carbines, but we're talking about standard semi-auto pistols that aren't really any different than the 9mm Berettas you'd find in a gun store today.

It could happen, but I doubt it. I expect some of them will go to the Phillipines, we always seem to send them hand me downs.

I thought this happened a couple of years ago...maybe they're just now actually rolling it out.

I'd gladly take some of those Beretta Model 92's off their hands.

They move really slow, and it gets slower with each update. Took them 5 years to agree on the M9, and this move to replace it is in year 11 I think. It's ridiculous. Don't even get me started on the money.

Even though not really a fan, I'd take a dinged up Beretta with >20,000 rounds through it over a new Hi Point or Keltec.

From what I recall, the Sig was the better gun back in the 1911 replacement competition but Beretta beat them out on magazine and parts costs.
I also recall a bit of controversy of Italian math that led to Berretta winning the contract.
Now Sig gets it

A load of surplus Italian police guns washed up on our fair shores recently. Picked up a Model 76 and it shoots like a dream.

I'd buy a used M9 or two if the price was right.
