So every one of you saying that only man and women should signup and not boys. But if you talk to recruiter will he really tell the truth about army/navy/air force life and would he pressure you to join. I had calls from recruiters and in order to get them off the phone I basically just had to hang up. When I told them I don't want to join they started saying such stuff as don't you want to server your country, aren't you patriotic etc.

recruiters have quotas to fill, so yeah, they want to get people to join
what is the point?

if you want to find out what it is like , talk to "real" people that are in/have been in

I think the days of the lying recruiters are long past. Even when I first joined in 1985, the first thing our Drill Sargeants asked was if the recruiters had told us or promised us anything special. No one answered, but they were made to ask to see if anyone had any potential contract problems before we ever really got started.

Also, as a Commander, I never had anyone ever approach me and tell me that things were different than they expected or they weren't getting what they needed.

This is why I couldn't join the military. 8 years is a long damn time, I have too many other plans to spend 8 years locked into a contract with one employer.

Yes, your obligation is for 8 years, but usually half (or more) of that time is done as Inactive Ready Reserves, which means you're still in, but you don't have to report in or do anything other than fill out a form that's mailed to you once a year making sure your phone number and address is up to date.

jemcam is absolutely correct about recruiters. There exists a built-in system within recruiting command (USAREC) which addresses what we called "recruiting improprieties". Gone are the days of outright lies. However, speaking from first hand experience, indeed some field recruiters are known to bend the truth somewhat.

The reason recruiters call you is because they use a tool known as a Lead Refinement List, or LRL. Without specifying all of the details behind the composition of this list, one can safely say that if your name is on it, they will call to ask "whazzup".

Who is to say that 6 months from now, you won't break up with your girlfriend, lose your job, or drop out of school and therefore, your outlook on military service might change?

Just because they talk to you doesn't mean that you have to join. It is your choice. All I am saying is that if you raise your right hand, be a man and live up to your obligations (contract). You'll be a better person because of it. There are a lot of hardships associated with Military life. It's not for everyone.
As far as him saying that you are not patriotic, I don't buy that. But, freedom isn't free and someone has to sacrifice. Someone has to sacrifice their time and lives so those misinformed protesters can go out and make asses of themselves.

Be very, very careful to ensure that you completely understand all the rules. Very few folks actually qualify for a full 40k. I don't know the rules but I do know that they are very specific.
