Armor plate

I've heard some people use A36 steel for safe rooms/vaults. I've also seen this steel listed as a "structural steel". How different is this from regular armor plate? And what does the A36 mean?

Armor plate is usually/often "face hardened." Making metal into an effective armor is a lot more complicated than one might think... Text

AFAIK, A36 is a basic structural steel... but I'm no metallurgist.

There are some materials guys who read this board, hopefully they'll chime in.
