The Bundy family of Nevada joined with hard-core militiamen Saturday to take over the headquarters of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, vowing to occupy the remote federal outpost 50 miles southeast of Burns for years.

The occupation came shortly after an estimated 300 marchers – militia and local citizens both – paraded through Burns to protest the prosecution of two Harney County ranchers, Dwight Hammond Jr. and Steven Hammond, who are to report to prison on Monday.

Among the occupiers is Ammon Bundy, son of Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, and two of his brothers. Militia members at the refuge claimed they had as many as 150 supporters with them. The refuge, federal property managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, was closed and unoccupied for the holiday weekend.

In phone interviews from inside the occupied building Saturday night, Ammon Bundy and his brother, Ryan Bundy, said they are not looking to hurt anyone. But they would not rule out violence if police try to remove them, they said, though they declined to elaborate.

"The facility has been the tool to do all the tyranny that has been placed upon the Hammonds," Ammon Bundy said.

"We're planning on staying here for years, absolutely," he added. "This is not a decision we've made at the last minute."

Neither would say how many people are in the building or whether they are armed. Ryan Bundy said the group would release a statement shortly.

"We will do whatever it takes to maintain our freedom," he said.

Government sources told The Oregonian/OregonLive that the militia also was planning to occupy a closed wildland fire station near the town of Frenchglen. The U.S. Bureau of Land Management posts crews there during the fire season.

Law enforcement officials so far have not commented on the situation. Oregon State Police, the Harney County Sheriff's Office and the FBI were involved.

Ammon Bundy posted a video on his Facebook page calling on patriots from across the country to report to the refuge – with their weapons.

The dramatic turn came after other militia groups had tried to dampen community concerns they meant trouble.

Brandon Curtiss, a militia leader from Idaho, told The Oregonian/OregonLive he knew nothing about the occupation. He helped organize Saturday's protest and was at the Harney County Fairgrounds with dozens of other militia for a post-parade function. Another militia leader, BJ Soper, took to Facebook to denounce the occupation.

The occupation is being led by hard-core militia who adopted the Hammond cause as their own.

Ammon Bundy met with Dwight Hammond and his wife in November, seeking a way to keep the elderly rancher from having to surrender for prison. The Hammonds professed through their attorneys that they had no interest in ignoring the order to report for prison.

Ammon Bundy said the goal is to turn over federal land to local ranchers, loggers and miners. He said he met with 10 or so residents in Burns on Friday to try to recruit them, but they declined.

"We went to the local communities and presented it many times and to many different people," he said. "They were not strong enough to make the stand. So many individuals across the United States and in Oregon are making this stand. We hope they will grab onto this and realize that it's been happening."

Among those joining Bundy in the occupation are Ryan Payne, U.S. Army veteran, and Blaine Cooper. Payne has claimed to have helped organize militia snipers to target federal agents in a standoff last year in Nevada. He told one news organization the federal agents would have been killed had they made the wrong move.

He has been a steady presence in Burns in recent weeks, questioning people who were critical of the militia's presence. He typically had a holstered sidearm as he moved around the community.

At a community meeting in Burns Friday, Payne disavowed any ill intent.

"The agenda is to uphold the Constitution. That's all," he said.

Cooper, another militia leader, said at that meeting he participated in the Bundy standoff in Nevada.

"I went there to defend Cliven with my life," Cooper said.

So 23 years later, are we going to see another Waco?

How will the Government respond?

Personally if I were Obama, I'd surround the place and cut water, electricity, heat and food to the place and starve them out into surrendering.

Oh, they are going to stay at a federal facility for years. Just not that one.

Cut them off, let no one in or out until they are all dead. Government shouldn't have backed down on Bundy's ranch, now this happens.

Also that Ryan Payne guy sounds like he should be in prison for the rest of his life, what a piece of shit.

why choose to occupy something built and funded with taxpayer money? I tried googling the building and it seems to be your 1500-2000sqft run of the mill wildlife/preserve operations and visitors center. Looks fairly nice from the outside.

No one wants another Waco. Nobody.

when people blatantly do something to provoke confrontation...what do you do? Do you call their bluff amd punch them in the nose or ignore them and watch them dissapear?

I have another question.. why doesn't this qualify as terrorism?

ter·ror·ism
ˈterəˌrizəm/Submit
noun
the use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims.

After looking at the definition, shouldn't it be terrorism?

So by the nature of their farming there is public land very close (mixed in?) with their private land, the arson was committed to protect their own land, caused less than $1,000 worth of damage to the public land, and the main witness of its danger was the grandson whose testimony was considered unreliable, and it's a mandatory 5 years? I don't blame them for striking back now.

EDIT: Oh wait, apparently there were two different fires that they got in trouble for, and only the 2006 one was acknowledged as defensive. So what's the usual punishment for hunting deer out of season?

Just wondering if anyone ever bothered to look into the real reasons this happened?

This interview with a former BLM worker is also interesting, regarding big business influencing Fed policy in the area :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNGJXDuLkdI

I don't know the whole story yet but I can tell from the posts no one here knows anything, just a bunch of bad assumptions.

BLM kicked the ranchers off the land, which they have had grazing rights to for 150 years. Supposedly it was to save some endangered turtles. Now there are too many turtles and the BLM kills the turtles. It was total bullshit, the video from the BLM whistleblower also mentions that turtles had nothing to do with the real reasons these people lost their ranches. The move has sent around 100 ranchers bankrupt.

Meanwhile Harry Reid owns property in the area, right next to the Bundy ranch.

This land was very nearly part of a huge deal to have a Chinese company build a massive solar power array. The deal fell through in 2013, but apparently some highways had been built in the area - in the middle of the desert - preparing a business corridor.

This is something a real investigative journalist should look into.

Can you see any Muslims among them or anyone with Arabic sounding names? If not, common sense in 'Murica will tell you it's not terrorism.

http://lasvegassun.com/news/2013/jun/14/company-dumps-big-laughlin-solar-project-says-mark/

I live here in Oregon and your 'version' of the events here is full of shit. The two men were convicted by a jury of their peers (locals) and only thing in contest is that the judges felt that the two deserved shorter sentences than the mandatory minimum. The only reason they were hoping for lesser charge was because of the terrorism statute and mandatory minimum on sentencing. Well that didn't work out and the men are prepared to turn themselves in to complete their sentences. The problems with the outsiders started when the local farm bureau started a petition (that had nothing to do with raising militia support) back before they were charged arguing for reduced charges and these fucking yahoos have now picked up on it and made it their own cause. The two men want nothing to do with the idiots with guns and the locals don't either. They can go back from where they came from or better yet, to the federal pen.

Is the minimum mandatory and removal of judicial discretion wrong? Yes, but it's the law. If the people don't like it then they need to get the lawmakers to change it. We can't have "activist" judges interpreting the law for themselves can we?

Good try at spin though, Sparky.

You make a title like that and I think Oklahoma City federal building. Skyscraper / heavily populated.
Turns out, it may just be some remote (empty) building in the mountains.
No hostages or violence, just grandstanding. A protest.

And this is about releasing two people from jail? Interesting.

Personally if I were Obama, I'd surround the place and cut water, electricity, heat and food to the place and starve them out into surrendering.

That sounds about right.

It's -4 degrees in Burns right now. The best thing the for PTB to do is to surround the place, cut off power, cut off supplies and let the idiots enjoy the beautiful eastern Oregon high desert winter weather.

"... a place for patriots to come..."

Good fucking luck getting them to come to Bumfuck, Oregon in the dead of winter...lol! Few roads means that the law will easily control access so good luck getting there. These idiots need supporters to flock to them and if they don't they are going to be left to hang out to (freeze) dry. It's really beautiful there but man it's a harsh place to live. The irony is that these idiots have come to the area against the wishes of the locals so they can protest that the federal government doesn't listen to the locals.

The only reason these idiots have latched on to the sentencing issues for the two men here in Oregon is because they are afraid that the public is forgetting what bad asses they were at the Bundy ranch so they need a new cause to challenge the government on.

These guys consider themselves patriots? No, they are criminals who think they can get what they want with guns and intimidation.

You've posted the drivel version of the wrong event. This time the gang bangers are defending arsonists, not thieves. Try to keep up.

These guys think that having guns is going to save them from the government. Lol. The military should roll in a tank and just blow that building to shreds.

You can't fight the military. Give it up. Maybe you could have given the military a run about 200 years ago, but not today. The technology the USA government wields is just too much for a bunch of so called patriots.

The gang bangers are doing this because the government failed to follow up on the Bundy standoff. The government, through failure to prosecute the thugs who participates in that fiasco, has emboldened them to further criminal acts. Defusing the Bundy standoff was a good idea. Failure to follow up with charges against the participants who committed crimes was ridiculous.

So far there's only intimidation, no violence, once they start shooting then you can call them terror... mentally unstable folks.
