If you don't mind my asking, how does ARMA compare to the Project Reality mod for BF2?

QFT. Looks pretty boring to me.

I can't tell from the screenies how the game will be, although the idea of a one-shot kill appeals to me as long it isn't a one shot kill no matter where you get hit. My point was that I don't care about how "real" a game is or anything else- the most important thing about a game is if it is fun. Who cares if it is real if it isn't any fun?

it isn't 1 shot kills no matter where

you can get shot in legs and have them broken so all you can do is crawl around.
arma was pretty gimpy to start but around 1.12 i got back into it, and it was way better, especially with mods.

ofp was great tho and I cant wait for arma2

Well, I like how ARMA2 looks like it can actually compete when it comes to presentability; let's just hope usability doesn't suffer as well. I found half the battle was fighting with the fucking controls.

Wow, I guess I won't bother checking it out then. :( Seems like with CoD4 being one of the best selling PC games of all time, there aren't going to be many people left to play this.

Not the same sort of game.

With Bohemia Interactive, user input goes into the game. They are probably one of the most interactive developers out there.

I haven't followed them lately, but they used to post in their forums all the time. Game coding was a 24 hour a day job for them, not just a 9-5 get it done snore fest.

Their dedication and commitment to their games is comendable.

-10x larger battlefields.
-Better ballistics on all the weapons
-10,000 meter view distance
-Better aviation controls
-Get shot once in the leg and your down unless you have a medic near you.
--No magic health kits to fix you up.
-It has a mission editor.
-Up to 128 players in a single game.
-No matter what, the BF2 engine doesn't stop that arcade feeling.

it can be up to 10000 players in a single game, but only a few people will be online playing this game...

i'm saying even if the game supports 1000 players, it's worthless if there are only 10 gamers playing the game at a given time. got it?

Just because more popular servers have 30-40 people on them during the day... doesn't make it a bad game... it just means the public just turns towards insanely retarded crap... The 10 second repetitive crap: shoot, die, respawn, repeat. Not saying these players are retarded as Im sure a bunch of them do play other games that require even just a little bit of thinking.

No, I can understand his frustration. There is quite a bit of sense to what he says and therein lies the problem; most people, myself included, would have loved to love ARMA, it was a cool looking game, in terms of gameplay, realism had been amped up from anything previously played, etc.

HOWEVER, it was buggy, glitchy, slow, didn't look all that great, and I didn't even know how to control the dude. If it can't even follow control protocols of a normal FPS, then for me, there's no incentive to learn, especially when the rest of it looks like crap.

I think the biggest control problem is most actions are done through a menu system which can make it seem more cumbersome.

You should definitely try out the latest patches though they fixed a lot of bugs.

edit:

Another turn off was the fact that it even brought top of the line SLI systems to their knees when it was released. Runs great on my q6600/4850 combo though.

Well that's not entirely true. The controls felt like complete crap my entire time through the singleplayer campaign. After a week or two (20 hours+ ?), they felt pretty natural. And yes I had the inertia crap turned off from the start.

And I don't really get all this "real FPS" anymore. Is there something less real out there or am I suppose to believe that jerky mouse control and throttled movement speed is suppose to represent the effect of humping 10 miles, then shooting stuff in real life.

The first one or the second one?

ARMA 2 isn't out yet, and last I heard it was going to be delayed to 2009.

AMRA Gold can be found most places you get PC games. It's ARMA plus the expansion pack.

Yeah, I find that's just hype and advertising, if anything, the real FPS games are that of Quake and Call of Duty, where you just gun shit down and keep going.

I think trying to assign games to very static genres isn't helping the pc gaming mature and branch out of one genre.

I think this holds especially true for the Strategy genre.

Yeah, I think so too, which is good because they're actually going to work on.

Arma 1 was terrible.I wanted to like it. Nothing comes close to Battlefield 2. Battlefield 3 is the only game on the horizon that matters.

Well I won't be subscribing to your newsletter. Battlefield 2 is a big pile of meh. It's not horrible, but it's FAR from the best FPS on PC, that's for sure. And because of that, I haven't paid the least bit of attention to Battlefield 3 news. I'll let it surprise me if its good, or it'll just pass along like it never mattered. Better than having all hype killed like with Battlefield 2.

BF2 is the most played FPS ever, and before it was BF1942, so expect BF3 to be the same, ARMA was the biggest let down ever i was totally gutted when i played, after 30mins id had enough it was so boring and incredibly hard that i just uninstalled it and went back to BF2.
