Armed Assault 2:
www.arma2.com

Anyone who stuck around until Arma 1.14 knows this game is going to be amazing. If you were an early adopter of Arma 1.0 and left it early because of its suckage, please note that BIS had no choice in the matter and the game today is really an entirely new game.

They even acknowledged that its early days sucked. Now comes the sequel which (they say) is the real successor to Operation Flashpoint - they did make OFP after all. This game has been labeled as "game 2" on their website for nearly 5 years and finally its here.

Some information for the noobs out there:
Go ANYWHERE, drive ANYTHING, shoot ANYONE!!!

Bohemia Interactive take a new step into the heart of military realism and settle another mark for true combat experience which has already earned them worldwide awards in the past.

ARMA 2 is set in a near future, year 2009, in a fictional state of Chernarus, a post-Soviet country where civil war raged for over 2 painful years. As a leader of USMC Force Recon team, you are sent with your squad to prevent further civilian casualties and ensure ongoing stability in Chernarus.

ARMA 2 is based on the latest generation technology, offering a large-scale game world, authentic and extremely detailed modern units, weapons, vehicles and environments, challenging single player and a vast array of multiplayer options.

Main Features

* Lifelike combat simulation (bullet ballistic & deflection, material penetration, etc.)
* Story driven single player full of twists and surprises
* Resource management, RPG elements
* Advanced dynamic conversation system
* Unique AI combat system
* Over 50 weapons and drivable vehicles
* Multiplayer with large scale maps for 50+ live players
* Built in mission editor
Simply put, you get shot once, your basically dead unless you have a medic around. Sorry auto-regenerated health addicted health pack users, this game is not for you. Like Call of Duty 4, Counter Strike, Unreal Tournament? Sorry this game isn't for you ether (unless you have an open mind).

This is going to be epic for us minority hardcore gaming fans who actually like thinking during their gaming experience rather than just relying purely on reflexes and like feeling like a real soldier in that in most occurances, there is no respawn.

i tried the first ARMA demo when it first came out. i never even got it working. too scared to give it another try. how are the server sizes and how full are they? it's not worth it if so few people play it.

Modern Red Orchestra. Sounds cool, and I keep hearing good things about Operation Flashpoint.

Still has Russians in it though... sigh.

It looks ok, I'm not sure what to make of it, the last one was buggy, and I couldn't figure a damn thing out.

Operation Flashpoint 2 sounds more attractive to me.

I'd argue that OFP2, its being made by a team who's never made an FPS. OFP2s MP limit is 32 for PC and 16 for Consoles, and not 128 like in Armed Assault. Also, ArmaII builds off of the engine they've been working on for 10 years. (Including the OFP days which was VBS1, Arma was VBS2, and now its VBS3). So I'd say that they have much more experience.

To answer some of the other questions: The servers are still quite full. The game sadly didn't have its 'finished' version until 1.14 and now it rocks. The demo version of the game was an unfinished version of the game, sadly. I also didn't mean to stereotype the CS/UT players here, I was just trying to convey that this isn't your typical run of the gun team fortress shooter.

A bunch of PDF documents with pictures and specifications:

Only multiplayer unofficial mod co-op saved Arma from being on my shit list.

I'm not getting my hopes up.

I will not disagree, but at the same time, OPF2 is offering alot more besides their online component, also, I'm not sure where you got 128 from, and keep in mind, this game is coming for the consoles as well, so I'm not sure how they'll handle it on that side.

Also, the weapons and vehicles selection they're offering with OPF2 looks stunning, around 100 weapons, and 70 vehicles or so.

ARMA2 could be great, don't get me wrong, and the newer screens look amazing, but I'm not entirely convinced.

I can imagine why. I'm not particularly skilled in games like CS. I'm decent in COD4, and can usually handle myself in Americas Army (pre-2.4 days were the best. now AA is just like CS, way too fast compared to how slow the game used to be. under 2.0 is my favorite time in AA as far as game speed is concerned). I like slower FPS games, because I treat often treat FPS games like scenario battle. I don't put my character in risk a lot of the time because I'd rather not get shot, even if that means I probably could have had 3 kills beforehand.

Now, the fast-paced run and gun games are fun, but from time to time I'd really enjoy a super realistic combat game.

OFP was a great game. Kinda clunky Online Browser, as I recall, but was worth the extra effort.

Arma 1 was terrible.I wanted to like it. Nothing comes close to Battlefield 2. Battlefield 3 is the only game on the horizon that matters.

Toooootally different games.

Opflash was awesome, ArmA was decent multiplayer with some mods, and I can't wait for ArmA 2 and OpFlash 2.

What he said is true though - the majority of FPS players out there don't want a game with such an extreme learning curve. But hey, at least there won't be squeakers screaming "HAX HAX HAX HAX!!!!!!" in ArmA 2 :laugh:

Some Armed Assault is decent with mods? I've been eyeing the gold edition since I got a 4870, it's only like $30. I downloaded the demo and played the single player mission or two, then went to play online but there were only 4-5 servers and most had 1-2 people on them. So I tried it but I don't think I got a very representative feel for the game.

Well I won't be subscribing to your newsletter. Battlefield 2 is a big pile of meh. It's not horrible, but it's FAR from the best FPS on PC, that's for sure. And because of that, I haven't paid the least bit of attention to Battlefield 3 news. I'll let it surprise me if its good, or it'll just pass along like it never mattered. Better than having all hype killed like with Battlefield 2.

Battlefield 3 will look as good or better than Bad Company, and when it is unveiled, it will look phenomenal. And I will be excited.

I don't know. I get pretty bored by getting gunned down all the time. You can't even pretend to go tactical in CoD 4, because some dipshit will take potshots at you, 2 meters away.

The maps are small, they're meant to heard lots of little sheep next to each other and that's it. Nothing really, except an elaborate playhouse for brainless idiots to practice the useful skills of life including:

1)Chucking flash, stun, and f(r)ag grenades
2) Using the automatic capabilities of a gun to it's utmost potential

I have had quite a bit of fun...too much fun and time put in, but in the end, I think ARMA2 might potentially solve my lack of a tactical experience...or Operation Flashpoint 2.

Wow, I guess I won't bother checking it out then. :( Seems like with CoD4 being one of the best selling PC games of all time, there aren't going to be many people left to play this.
