Go Arizona! Pretty nice move and a big slap in the face of obama as well. When the federal government doesn't do it's job regarding illegal immigration the states simply must act themselves. Hopefully more states follow suit, my guess Texas will be next.

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/04/23/arizona-governor-signs-controversial-immigration/

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer on Friday signed into law a controversial bill that seeks to crack down on illegal immigration.

The sweeping measure will make it a crime under state law to be in the country illegally. It will also require local police officers to question people about their immigration status if there is reason to suspect they are in the country illegally.

It takes effect in 90 days after the current legislative sessions in the next several weeks.

Before signing the bill, Brewer called the measure "another step forward in protecting the state of Arizona."

She said the bill "represents another tool for our state to use as we work to solve a crisis that we did not create and the federal government has refused to fix -- the crisis caused by illegal immigration."

Earlier, President Obama called the bill "misguided" and said it could violate people's civil rights. He said he's instructed the Justice Department to see if it is legal.

The bill's Republican sponsor, state Rep. Russell Pearce of Mesa, said Obama and other critics of the bill were "against law enforcement, our citizens and the rule of law."

Yes, checking citizenship status will endanger our citizens. What next? They'll probably want to see my drivers license!

I love how Obama calls it irresponsible lmao

Even better. He trotted out some soldiers who weren't yet citizens to show us examples of what people can be. I sure as hell give them credit, but Obama used them like a pimp uses a whore.

I imagine amnesty for illegals will become the top priority in Washington now.

The illegal issue asside, it's good to see at least one state starting to assert the authority they have. We'll have to see what kind of slapdown comes.

1) Pass un-Constitutional law
2) Get sued when enforcing said law
3)???
4) Profit?

If AZ Republicans want to waste their own time and money on stupid ass lawsuits, that is their business. But when the taxpayers are paying for their stupid ass publicity stunts and the people of AZ are going to have to put up with this fascist bullshit long enough to get it ruled un-Constitutional, that pisses me off.

Spidey, right here, right now, prove you are in the US legally or I'll throw your ass in jail. Now boy! What, you can't? You don't carry a certified copy of your birth certificate or naturalization papers at all times? Another fringin' illegal. Back to Spideyland for you.

not now, but probably 2011-2012, right in the election cycle for him. since he has fucked over the immigrants thus far, figure he will try to save face as he fights to stay in the white house and further fuck up this country.

Really? In Louisvile, KY, you carry your passport with you at all times? And you, a lover of Liberty, think that having the police demanding to see your papers at any time is hunky dori?

No f'n shit. the guy apparently isn't considering both sides of the table. TOUGH Choices people. It's called picking the lesser of two evils.

Hopefully this AZ slap in the face of teh Feds for wanting to protect their own borders and excercise some soveriengty will help pave the way for California to legalize pot and curtail the evil drug war.

Dude, do you live in AZ? Do you realize that Phoenix is becoming the kidnapping capital of the world? Do you understand the problems they are having? Get real, study up, and realize you have to make tough choices. Such as, picking the lesser of two evils.

Why is the law unconstitutional?

It instructs the law enforcement to do what the Feds are supposed to do, but do not.
Any difference between the slaughter house raids? They collect everyone and put them in a confinement until they can show that they are legal. Most choose to take the deportation because they can not prove it and do not wish to stay confined.

How do the Feds make such a distinction when they pull people aside - racial profiling?

Not really sure why enforcing immigration law should be considered any different from enforcing other laws. Police can already question and detain people they only suspect of committing a crime, as long as there's some sort of justifiable reason for their suspicion.

Taking a dump on the Constitution is the lessor of two evils?

What is unconstiutional?

The fact that the states are doing something that the Feds are tasked to do but refuse to?

Real employer penalties, border enforcement, and a guest worker program.

the employers have been using e-verify which by its nature is creating higher identity theft issues. the feds won't do anything to protect the border or do any real immigration reform. many az people would rather the feds take care of the problem since it is a fed border, but they fail and won't even talk about it. instead they put up these bullshit "virtual fences" where they just video tape them coming across.

this is just a state that is being overrun by illegals protecting itself since the feds won't do anything about it. phx, az is the kidnapping capital of the US but again, the feds just look the other way.

I live in Tucson. The Phoenician fascists can go fuck themselves. This isn't picking the lessor of two evils. It is piling one evil on top of another. And picking the wrong target. You want to get rid of illegals? Get rid of the employers who hire them and they go home. This isn't wishful thinking, it is fact. When the housing boom went bust, the number of illegals here dropped like a rock. But the AZ Republicans don't want to hurt employers. They want the cheap, exploitable labor.

Yes. Just like legal drugs without a drug war is a lesser evil than illegal drugs with a drug war.
Doesn't one of the evils have to be evil for it to be the lesser of two evils? I can't see the problem with legal drugs and no drug war.
