Arguments against human cloning.

notfred

Lifer
People say it's immoral.... Can someone explain why? I don't see it. I could see it being immoral without the clonee's consent, but other than that, I see no problem with it. What am I missing?

related note: why do people care about what George Bush thinks about cloning? His job is NOTto be the conscience of the USA.

<< Cloning is our first step for the super human. >>

Can you imagine an "enhanced" human race? I would "upgrade" my legs so that I could jump very high 🙂

<< One problem is the "slippery-slope" it suggests. Where do we draw the line at what's kosher and what's bad ju-ju? >>

And cloning is bad because........?

Just for interest's sake, go rent the movie 'Gattica' (sp?). Very good film that springboards off of the issue of genetic engineering.

I did a report on this subject like 2 weeks ago, hope the teacher doesn't count this new information that has just come to light agaisnt me....

Anyways, it can be immoral because it would allow a person to live forever(in some way), it makes human life just more of a thing rather then something really special, and then their is the whole super human race thing. There are many more ways that it can be bad and immoral.

Allowing a person to live forever is immoral? Damn, better establish a "mandatory death age" so that, jsut in case anyone lives past, oh, let's say 150, they get killed to prevent living forever.

Or if you mean "allows a person to live forever by passing on genetic material to another person" - ever hear of children?

Super human race thing has no bearing in cloning. Cloning is making a copy, not an improvement.

I own Gattaca, it still doesn't apply to cloning.

You are wrong, because once we clone we can improve the genes. Clone certain parts of the body not the whole thing. We can engineer the genes to remove diseases. A super human will not be too far away if we really poured all the money into human cloning.

That's like saying the discovery of iron ore caused handgun violence, cause the refinement of iron ecventually led to building guns...

cloning is good because then we get our own slaves to do whatever we want! but then peta (people eating tasty animals) and other rights groups step in and ahahahaahahaha

Religious concerns aside....

I think AT THIS STAGE OF CLONING'S DEVELOPMENT it is irresponsible. Too many deformities. We can't even clone multiple animals correctly that live a full life without deformities and we're trying it on humans; bad idea.

Do you have to write it about why it is bad? because I think that there are no problems with it, people are afraid that someone would be able to make a perfect copy of them in minutes because of all the science fiction shows and movies that they have watched. I don't think that a copy could be produced that quickly, but people have strange fears.

Immortality via cloning? Only if you could transfer who you are to a clone. I would rather have my consciousness transferred to an android body. One with a telescoping unit to impress the lady androids.

Almost ALL cloned animals develop strange abnormalities over time. Remember Dolly? Well Dolly is having a problem with a weird sort of obesity. Imagine a human developing Alzheimers at 15, or new types of cancer. And these traits could be heritable assuming the individuals made it to maturity. The molecular and cellular biologists are saying WHOA! we have problems here and some idiot MD types who have to go underground in Italy are going to try to do it anyway, because they want to be first. Egomaniacal pricks.

Yeah that might be an arguement, but if they were to clone a human, they would make sure that their technology is a little better than what we have now.

There is a difference between cloning and genetic engineering. Nonetheless, the public can't accept it for reasons above. 'Nuff said... you think violence with abortion clinics were bad? This'd be hell.

biggest problem with cloning is the "harvesting" aspect of it.

you grow clones solely for the purpose of harvesting their organs.

the question is much deeper, does the clone have a soul, is it a life. does it have rights.

to me it's simple, if you create a clone and it can talk, think etc then it is a life and deserves all the same rights as any other human being.

It is going to happen whether people like it or not.
Making it "taboo" is going to backfire at some point in the future.

and you know what? No one will be able to stop it.
That is what people are scared of

I didn't mean allowing someone to live was immoral, but what if some rich dude like Bill Gates or some other dude just keeps clones of himself so that he is always alive forever and forever, if too many people did this we would overpopulate and that leads to new diseases and bacteria and all that. It's kinda better explain in the Sixth Day. Now what if people just harvest the clones for their organs that would be denying them the right to live, that would be kinda wrong. I agree that cloning is going to happen one day and it will backfire sooner or later. It could lead to end of the human race as a large majority of the people will be these super humans, but since they are all the same one virus or bacteria could wipe them all out. My grammar sucks since I need to go to bed, ok my grammar is always sucky...

Also, forgot to mention in the movie the Sixth day, the scientest's wife is cloned and she doesn't wished to be cloned, but she can't stop them after she is dead. In the movie they also make like back-ups of the people's mind so they know the stuff the original knew and the stuff can be edited so...

It's good to see a few people calling for patience around here. Besides being morbidly obese, Dolly also will "enjoy" around 1/3 of the lifespan typical of her species.

That reminds me of an an experiment undertaken some time ago with cloned frog eggs. The tadpoles were perfectly functional, but halfway through metamorphosis they suddenly and inexplicably died. Not a single tadpole made it through to adulthood. I think this is an old experiment so by now we may understand what went wrong, but it clearly demonstrates the kind of unexpected problems we may face with human cloning. Like ShadowHunter said, at this point in time there is no way in hell that we are ready to clone humans.

People watch too many movies. If a transporter a la Star Trek was invented tomorrow folks would be up in arms calling for it to be banned because of all the horrible transporter accidents that could happen. You'll be transformed into a pile of steaming goo! You'll be split into 'good' and 'evil' parts! You'll be be combined with another person! You'll be sent to another universe where everyone has a gotee!
