Args...today is so lucky for me...Just when I was thinking why didnt I get on the freeway ramp...I got pulled over for speeding

Does anyone know how much it is if I am 18 miles over the speed limit?

Also, does anyone what I can do to avoid paying the bill cuz I already did traffic school?

I heard that if you go to court and the police officer does not appear then the case gets dismissed..but what happens if he does go to court and stuff?

Depends on the state. 18 over here usually bites you for ~$160-170. You can take defensive driving and keep it off your record, but if you've already done that you may want to see if there are any other options.

Its gonna cost you a couple of hundred of dollars. 95% of the time the cop will show up in court. Basically its gonna be his word against yours and you will lose. There is no way you can get out of paying the fine.

any cop that doesn't show up in court is a moron. it is a mandatory 4 hours overtime no matter how long you are there.

Since you live in Irvine or nearby there and you are Asian....the cops are gonna think you're some kind of thug. Just pay the fine and get on with your life.

Guess cops have nothing else better to do.
Does anyone know how much it is if I am 18 miles over the speed limit?
Here in PA, that will run you $90-$100. The real expense is the boost in insurance premiums, if your point total exceeds a certain threshold.
Also, does anyone what I can do to avoid paying the bill cuz I already did traffic school?
If you went to traffic school because of another violation, you won't get sympathy from the magistrate...they rarely go easy on repeaters. If you went to traffic school to lower your insurance premiums, it won't make a difference.

True, but very few cops don't show. If you go to court, you can get a plea bargain from the prosecutor before the case (though each state is different). I've been to court twice: the first time I was offered a plea bargain that would have reduced the fine $25 and kept the point penalty the same (I didn't take it). The other time I was offered a plea bargain that reduced the fine by $50 and lowered the point penalty by 2 points (I naturally accepted that). You rarely do worse if you go to court; it just takes up your time (which CAN be "expensive" in intangible ways).

Ok... First of all, I dont think being a particular race or not as to do with this particular case... I do not think the police officer is a racist... He was just conducting his business.

Orange county is relatively large and I live about 25 miles away from irvine. I dont mind paying for the ticket and get on with my life.
Its just that I am not prepared to be punished financially...

-The reason why is because I am barely getting by supporting myself and I would need to borrow more loans to pay for this ticket. --Thats how poor I am. Yes!

If there is a way of lowering the fees or even getting let go then I would very much do so because I am just too POOR!!!

If you can't afford a ticket (in whichever way), why the heck were you speeding in the first place? And have you learned your lesson?

Looks like someone is going to have their insurance rates raised, a stiff fine come and its doubtful the cop won't show if you contest the ticket. Since you went to traffic school already, you can try to contest the ticket (in hopes the officer doesn't show -- unlikely). If convicted, you can plead to the court for another course of traffic school -- they sometimes let you.

Just be in your best clothes and best behavior before you show up. Also, if you know a lawyer, they can be useful in these situations.

First of all, if you already got busted, went to traffic school, and got busted again, you didn't learn. Maybe getting the ticket put on your record and your paying the fine will teach you to control yourself. :) Anyway, if you go to court, the cop is almost guaranteed to show up. If he does, kiss your "not-guilty" away :)

There are ways to get off on technicalities. 18 miles per hour... you're probably screwed. Describe the road conditions, where the cop was, and the code number of the law you broke, and I may be able to help you more. Was it a speed trap? I.e., was the officer who pulled you over the same as the one who gunned you with the radar? If so, both will probably have to appear in court if you plead not guilty. Go to the department of motor vehicles and grab the Vehicles and Traffic Law handbook. Should be like a buck, and it's available to the public. Find the code number of the law you broke, and make sure it matches what you actually did. If it doesn't, there's a chance you can get off the hook. Regardless, you'll want to cite this section from memory when you go to court.

And go to court. Only a small percentage of people actually go to court, and your chances of getting a reduced fine or working out a payment plan or lowering the number of points on your license is actually pretty significant. You may not be able to get completely off the hook... after preparing your case, you may wish to plead for mercy rather than not guilty -- and the judge is going to be aware that you took off work and went through the inconvenience of coming to court. So make sure you keep your mouth shut unless the judge asks you a question, always address as "you're honor" and not "your majesty" (like in evolution), and make sure to do your homework. Oh, and don't try to offer the excuse that other people were speeding. That never flies.

Just take it to the DA (a hearing, but not a trial). Everyone is happy that way (the cop doesn't have to even come in). I was in court one day & saw a judge give about 40 people in a row a 0point $50 fine + $35 surcharge for anything from 0-20 over. For 20-30 it was normally $75 + 2 points + $35 surcharge. But it all depends on the judge/DA you get.

If you're that poor you should consider letting go of the car and taking the bus/subway/train from now on. It'll save you a lot of expense.
