I just got in my brand spanking new stick of PC-100 Crucial RAM part number MT8LSDT1664AG-10EB1. I put it in my K7 Pro and the BIOS read the change correctly - when loading Windows it freezes.

This is RAM with timing 2-2-2. I have super bypassing enabled.

I put my old one back in. That's Kingston - it works fine.

Do the timings in the BIOS need to be exactly what the RAM lists? I think they were a bit slower set (didn't pay much attention to it), would this have something to do with it?

Also - when something says the timings are 2-2-2, what are the 3 digits? All motherboards I have worked with in the past only allowed you to tweak the CAS Latency - what about the other latencies?

And are there any other reports of this module not working in my mobo?

try to set the latency to 3-3-3 and see how that goes.

these are the letencies (i forgot which one is which), but basically they are saying how many clock cycles in between write. so if you set it to 2, which means 2 cycles between each write, that may be harsh for the RAM. try 3-3-3

I had some stability issues with Crucial "CAS2" memory in a couple of K7 Pro-based systems so switched to Mushkin only and never regretted it...It's about the same price, maybe even cheaper...

From talking with a guy at Micron, the first number is CAS Latency; the second number is CAS-to-RAS delay; the third number is just RAS Latency.

RAS = Row Access Speed
CAS = Column Access Speed

So since it appears that there are known conflicts with Crucial RAM and K7 Pro...I'm just going to stick the Crucial stick in my old machine and keep my Kingstom ValueRAM in my current machine since at least the Kingston works, and it's more or less the same speed.

I have seen Crucial memory that was rated 2-2-2 only be reported to BIOS as 2-3-2 by the memory module's SPD.

Hmm... sounds to me like its a problem with VIA Crapsets, not the ram. Never have troubles with my BX chipset board, but do have troubles with my VIA 133A. The 133A won't accept mixed ram, or ram without an SPD. Luckily I have 4 128MB Mushkin High Performace Rev2 that run 160Mhz 222. Just if I had regular access to a CPU that could handle that speed. I only tested at a local overclocker friendly shop that had an unlocked P3-933.

I know that Via chipsets are unstable.
That is why I decided against the Socket A route and took the Slot A/AMD 751 Irongate chipset route!

I have the RAM working now on a BX chipset. I'm waiting to see if it locks up. If it is unstable, time to get an RMA..

I am running Crucial CAS 3 RAM at CAS 2 on an Abit KT7, do not know whether it is the chippest or just bad RAM you've got
