Yeah, Goodwill/Value Village. You'd be surprised, there's a lot of crap but usually some pretty decent stuff as well. Plus, it's a tenth to a hundredth the price of what you're looking at...

I feel ya... I got lucky... brother worked at a supermarket and they were throwing away their office furniture at the time. This desk looks brand spanking new and it's so sturdy I can jump on it without worry... unbelievable. What a score.

Some 2x4's, some plyboard, screws, sandpaper (important), paint.

Mix well

and you've got a desk.
