posted in Gen HW but no replies... you guys seem friendlier 🙂

Here's my system.
VIA MVP3 chipset mobo
AMD K6/2 500 cpu
Elsa Gladiac GeForce GTS 32 mb DDR
Sound Blaster Live 5.1 MP3
Linksys 100/10 NIC
128 MB PC133 @ 100 because stupid old chipset doesn't support +33
running WIN ME, VIA 4in1 version 4.31v, latest drivers of everything

Here's my problem.
It runs fine during games like counter-strike and starcraft.
it crashes in Windows. especially in IE or MS Word.
WHY????

TIA

edit: it crashed RIGHT AFTER I POSTED THIS!!! IT'S DRIVING ME NUTS!!!!

FIXED, by flashing to latest BIOS!!!

what do you expect, its a via chipset......

but anyways, it might be not enough heating. I installed a case fan in mine and problem solved.

yeah, i heard about probs with VIA and Live (and maybe Win ME).

So you telling me if i revert back to 98SE, it'll all be fixed?

was it working fine with '98?...if so then go back to it until you get better compatible hardware... 😀

I say Sh1tcan WinME completely and never go back to it again. Nearly all new systems (HP, Compaq, etc) are going out with WinME and we just cringe! Lockups and problems everywhere. SBLive has many issues too. I say get a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz on Win2000 and you'll be fine. Win2000 is a great gaming OS contrary to what many people will say.

okie dokie...
will revert back to Win98SE tomorrow first thing in the morn.

argh... i had so many problems with vortex2 and VIA. now it's back to same old with Live and VIA... sigh...

Those older Aureal cards bite balls. I have a few of these sitting on the shelf here, nobody wants them. The SBLive is a great card if you can get it configured right. I've heard of many problems with the SBLive and VIA chipsets. I'd use the Santa Cruz card anyhow. Rocks in games. Yeah, stay away from WinME. Even Microsoft is admitting they fvcked up with it.

Sounds like you are having browser crashes. If you haven't tried it download the fix that MS has posted for IE5/5.5

it was a fresh install... don't wanna do a full install again.
so annoying to do it all over again and re-install all my programs.

i'll try the IE update first.
thanks all.

psteng, I run WinMe on a via chipset with no problems at all. Instead of loading all the 4in1 drivers just load the agp driver. Don't know if this will help but thats what I run.

hmmm, i used to have a k6-3/450 rig running on a dfi board (with the MVP3 chipset).

i only used 98se on it and never had a problem with it crashing.

Hmm, a couple things:

1) The mvp3 chipset was long before the VIA/Live conflict(although there are a few issues with the mvp3)

2) Vortex vs Live, Live sucks in this comparison, IMO.

3) Win ME most likely problem.

4) IE crashing. The primary reason I use Netscape. I can't go 2 days using IE(any version), it has always been a stability killer for me.

Yea, try Win98.

Well, I'm formatting as we speak...

Weird thing is that 2 of my other systems use VIA chipsets (MVP3 and Apollo 133) and run WinME fine. One of them uses a SQ2500 (I'm amazingly got the vortex/VIA to work w/out crashing), and the other a MX400.

I will also try disabling SB16 emulation and the advice on only VIA AGP drivers. Thanks.

well, after trying all your suggestions to no avail (including a format and fresh install of both 98 and 2000), I downloaded and flashed the latest BIOS version and VOILA!!!

NO MORE CRASHES!!!!!!
i can't describe how happy I am!!!!

once again, many thanks to those who gave suggestions. 😀
