are you kidding me, it's a lot better than that real crap. well, i guess that isn't saying much.

it's not called ogg for christ's sake! ogg is just a container format, like AVI (btw, AVI is not divx, it's just a container, it can hold many different types of audio/video combos like MP3/DivX, or Dolby Digital/XviD)

VORBIS is the name of the audio technology, not OGG!

VORBIS VORBIS VORBIS

whatever its called its just a lame fringe codec which no one will ever take serious
No one will ever take it seriously, but why is it lame? Because it gives better quality than mp3 and supports variable bitrates?

No, because MS didn't make it. According to Ameesh, anything no made by MS is lame (especially open source stuff)

POS? It's leaps and bounds better than Windows Media Player. Try to extract an audio track from a movie file with WMP. Try to cut parts of the video out with WMP. Then tell me which one is the POS.

DIVX is better than everything out there. Wonder why it isn't used more often.
Because most people don't want to use some "hacker" codec. Hell, most people don't even know what a codec is. People want something simple and of good quality. Windows Media and Quicktime files offer this.

ugh, the point is playback ease/quality/cpu usage not the ability to edit video whcih i could care less about. if i want to edit vid i'll use real tools.

divx + mediaplayer is def superior on a pc by far. i dunno what apple is doing but i think they purposely make their player run like crap on pcs.

Whatever. Quicktime plays fine on my machine. I don't have any problems with it and you know what? It EVEN plays AVI files well! You sound like a disgruntled PC user who hasn't had much experience with Quicktime.

well it's not windows media player, and it's not a real player... so in my opinion, it wins by default. 🙂 But it does seem to work very well.

Quicktime is an excellent player and format(whatever the format is called). The quality of Quicktime vids are generally top notch, especially movie trailers. A DivX vid of similar quality would be huge in comparison.

The software does run like crap on PCs. The stupid GUI is VERY unresponsive. If that's how Aqua runs on macs, then I truly pity the fools who use them.

doubtful. the quick time vids i see studios using for trailers look like cr@p compared to good divx. divx isn't big either.

here's the Disney Finding Nemo -Pixar- Trailer in DIVX. if you want to see some DIVX. its like 24mb but isn't streamed.

albeit in 3.11 alpha and not 5.02 which would probably be smaller.

i've used many vid players in windows, and most of them are superior to apples badly written program quicktime. quicktime has always been cr@ppy on windows. its functionality isn't much better then real player, which i now refuse to ever use again.

quicktime might have mpeg4 now, but its more equiv to divx 3.11 alpha then 5.02 right? with 5.02 u can get smaller files. i know real's version of mpeg 4 is like divx 3.11, just with lousier quality.

with 5.02 i can playback perfectly smooth with all quality settings maxed😛 its not bad.

i'd still have full bitrate mpeg2 though.

Unfortunately, products such as the Kodak digital cameras only record the video clips in QuickTime format. I wish they would not have done this. Canon didn't use the QT format for their video clips. I had to get QT just so I could watch the Kodak clips. What a waste!

Not true, I've seen whole movies reduced to 700 megs using Divx, it's an excellent codec. Version 5.02 is great for crunching video down and keeping the highest quality.

Divx is not hacker codec and is slowly becoming more mainstream.

BTW: I highly recommend Slowview if you don't like Quicktime, Slowview will play Quicktime video's.

i hate real's player and their attitudes but their compression is better than windows media, both in audio and video, especially down in the lower bitrates. quicktime basically bites the big chode at low bitrates, but when it's cranked up it looks gorgeous, which is why they do movie trailers in it. they're close to dvd quality (but without the resolution). better than divx.

ummm... MS didn't make MP3. Nor did it make any sort of MPEG decoding, for that matter. It simply plays those files. Also MP3 supports VBR too 😛

I couldn't disagree more.... I actually might have RealPlayer installed on my computer if I had *ever* seen a video in RP format that wasn't completely garbled with artifacts and pixellation, with bad swooshy sound to boot.

ever seen a sorensen encoded movie? kthxbye, come back when you know what you are talking about.

Quicktime sux bigtime.

Cons:
no full screen
no full screen
no full screen
movies huge for poor quality
trying to stick quicktime pro up ur ass - constantly

Pros: It's uninstallable?

I wish ppl would just stick to divx; it's proven, small, high quality, FULLSCREEN through WMP or whatever movie player u like

and from what I have seen about quicktime encoding on the G4, the encoding goes like a zillion times faster too

Agreed Divx is what should become standard or Xvid which is just an open source divx (and Divx spelt backwards). So long as I can use the player of my choice.

DivX as a commercial codec won't go far because of the rather restrictive licensing. I'm hoping XviD developers can get their act together and get a polished product out the door.

and that they make it so it can be streamed

the only plus quicktime has is that it can be streamed and doesnt need buffering like wma does

RealPlayer = spyware infested, poor quality crap.
QuickTime = poor size/quality ratio, and no one likes paying for fullscreen support.
DivX = free for encoding, excellent size/quality ratio, fullscreen for free, but not streamable yet.

I'll take my DivXs, thanks.

And as far as OGG vs MP3 - yes, OGG > MP3. And no, people will NOT stop calling it an "OGG" - it's a smaller and easier thing to remember, considering that's the extension of the file. Do you see people calling MP3 "Fraunhofer" compression?

- M4H

what a phenominal number of uninformed zealots... amazing.

Divx, ogg? You're the kind of people that think all servers should run linux and be built whitebox machines.

ok so I'm not a computer-video professional nor do I know what a sorensen encoded movie is, but I am a full-fledged "regular consumer" who watches digital video from time to time, and the way that RealPlayer performs (and takes over your computer) has turned me off from the format forever.
