Argh, why do people use Quicktime??

I'm trying to watch paintball movies at work and am getting screwed because I don't have admin rights on my machine, which means I can't install the stupid software to watch them...

Any ideas on other players or plugins that will allow me to view these movies?

Any ideas on why people would want to dodge convention and use quicktime to make their movies?

Actually, the Sorenson codec is very good and you can get some great quality out of Quicktime. Just look at all the movie trailers which come out as QuickTime.

Admittedly, needing Administrative Rights is a pain, but installing QuickTime is not nearly as painful as anything RealMedia makes.

I agree, there are lots of recent trailers that use it...

However, it's akin to a band offering sample music for download and then only providing .ogg format songs, or whatever they're called, instead of the commonly accepted and universal .mp3 or .wav formats.

Are you kidding me?? Quicktime is NOT the same as Ogg Vorbis. Quicktime is a great format for digital video and many many many people have it. Whenever I do a fresh install, Quicktime is definitely on the list of must have software.

The new Quicktime with mpeg4 is great.

its a lot better than realplayer. the only thing i don't like is i can't just drag the file into the QT window to have it play, or at least i've never figured it out.

Dude, I'm not trying to compare the two as far as being in any way equivalent in quality or whatever - they aren't even the same types of media.

What I was alluding to is that when people encode their videos in Quicktime, they're using a somewhat obscure standard that will leave a lot of people out and unable to view the clips - not only people like me in my current work situation, but also people who don't have the know-how to download and install software or people who refuse to install invasive software like RealPlayer or even Quicktime to some degree.

The reason for my post was to point out that there are standard formats of audio, video, images, etc on the Internet for a reason - to be sure that most if not all people viewing your content, regardless of operating system or hardware, are able to view what you are offering without any special downloads, drivers, etc...

(This topic was not meant to be a flame on Apple or Quicktime, I just want to watch movies!)

Same with real media. Just use MPEG for Christ's sake.

i HATE Real. Their software is buggy, and has spyware.

QT isn't too high on my list either, but i'll take it over Real. Everybody should use MPEG as the standard.

You're drastically underestimating quicktime in your analogy to ogg.

Ogg is a format for fringe opensource looneys.

QT is one of the three most popular formats for internet/streaming video, and it has a very strong hold on the higher end of that market, such as movie trailers and advertisment videos.

MPEG1 & MPEG2 aren't even in consideration, the bandwith neccisary to get a decent picture is massive compared to qt/real/wm.

MPEG4 should be nice, but its still brand new.

.mpg/.mpeg and .avi are the de facto standards (A format, language, or protocol that has become a standard not because it has been approved by a standards organization but because it is widely used and recognized by the industry as being standard.) for video on the internet, just as .gif and .jpg are standards for images and .wav and .mp3 are standards for audio.

Real and Quicktime are proprietary standards that are not supported by other media players other than the ones they make, whereas most, if not all media players, even Real and Quicktime players will play .avi/.mpg files with no problem.

Bart - I didn't try to make the analogy accurate or anything - I only used Ogg because I recently downloaded a CD that was encoded with Ogg and couldn't do anything with it and was like "WTF, that was worthless" and deleted it right away.

I also avoid real and quicktime movies whenever possible, though I recently had to break down and download Quicktime at home - but didn't let it try to take over as default player for everything like it wanted to...

Either way, standards become standards (de facto) because they're accessible by the greatest number of people.

You're off your rocker. Quicktime is A LOT more popular than you give it credit for and is in NO WAY an "obscure" format.

Real and Quicktime are proprietary standards that are not supported by other media players other than the ones they make, whereas most, if not all media players, even Real and Quicktime players will play .avi/.mpg files with no problem.

That's not true. I've seen many players that can play Quicktime files.

You know Winamp supports Ogg with no plugins right? Ogg > mp3. It's those looneys using WMP that hold it back.

Quicktime was around a long time before any so-called 'standard' offerings were. For a long time, Quicktime was the *only* choice when it came to full-motion video on the computer. It's hardly comparable to RealPlayer. Plus, Quicktime can allow you to do things that simply aren't very feasible with another player. Its built-in panorama capabilities are great.

argh!!! this is sooooo annoying!

it's not called ogg for christ's sake! ogg is just a container format, like AVI (btw, AVI is not divx, it's just a container, it can hold many different types of audio/video combos like MP3/DivX, or Dolby Digital/XviD)

VORBIS is the name of the audio technology, not OGG!

VORBIS VORBIS VORBIS

No one will ever take it seriously, but why is it lame? Because it gives better quality than mp3 and supports variable bitrates?

quicktime is great, and i would say that many many people have it, so it's not that obscure. just because you don't have the ability to install it....
