Argh!!! Unlocking Gouken in Street Fighter IV

Seriously! I've read all the how-to documents on the web, I can get at least 2 perfects, 3 ultra finishes, 5 first strikes, no continues, and I've already unlocked Akuma! What am I doing wrong?!

I can easily crush through the fights on Easiest setting (or normal for that matter) with Sagat and meet all the criteria for unlocking Gouken, but when I defeat Seth it always throws me in a battle with Akuma instead of Gouken. Is my game broken or something?

P.S. Seth is the cheapest POS since the Eternal Champions boss on Sega Genesis.


Update 04/12/2009 - Beat the game with Ryu and satisfied all conditions the same way as I did with Sagat. However, instead of fighting Akuma, it had me fight Gouken. He's now unlocked for me. Odd that none of the Online FAQs I've found mention this.
 
did you beat the game with akuma already?

and you have to beat it with someone you have arleady beaten it with.

This is how I did it. Unlocked Gouken, beat the game with him, then went back and beat it again with I think Sagat who I had already beaten it with.

yes and yes. Beat it with akuma and Sagat has gone through the game many times.
 
Even beat the game with Gen, just because I read that it might be associated (Gen sucks BTW, and it took awhile to beat Seth with him). Gen's movie is similar to Akuma's ending, just from Gen's perspective BTW.

I just want to unlock Gouken period as a playable character. Next up will be Seth.

Here's a serious departure from the published methods.

Unlock Akuma and beat the game with him. Then beat the game again with any character by winning the matches in the following ways...

Fight 1. Perfect
Fight 2. Ultra
Fight 3. Ultra
Fight 4. Ultra
Fight 5. Normal
Fight 6. Normal
Fight 7. Normal

This sequence would satisfy all the most consistent requirements as long as you got your 5 first strikes in too.

On an unrelated note, is there any way to build your ultra gauge by means other than taking hits?
 
I'm not sure about all this 'first strike' garbage, but here's how I did it:

-Had Akuma unlocked
-Played through with Ryu, who I had beaten the game with already
-Played on easiest difficulty, one round matches
-Had one perfect (not on first fight)
-Had 3 ultras
-Beat game without losing a single match
-Beat Gouken at the end
 
if u are doing 3rnd matchs u cant lose one 1rnd.

put it on 1 rnd and easiest. plus u need to beat with akuma. i didnt have a aproblem unlocking him.
 
I don't know what to tell you...I just followed the quick guide in the Cheats section on GameFAQs. I did it playing one round fights on Easiest. Got it on my first try.
 
The requirements for 1 perfect , 3 ultra (super finishes work too) , 5 first strikes ONLY APPLY IF YOURE DOING 1 ROUND FIGHTS.

If youre playing the standard 2 out of 3 rounds per fight then the requirements increase. dont remember the exact number but its out there somewhere.
 
Beat the game with Akuma then set the game to one round and easiest and play with someone you already beat the game with:

1st game: perfect 1st strike
2nd game: ultra "
3rd game: ultra "
4th game: ultra "
5th game: 1st strike
Finish the rest however but you cannot lose ever throughout the entire process.

Yes, I'm using the easiest setting, set to 1 round matches, and a time limit of 99. I'm using Sagat, who I've beaten the game with many times. Maybe I need to use Ryu?

This really sucks, as I'm certain I'm following the methods correctly. The Ultra Combo finishes don't have to be perfect rounds do they or are ultra combo finishes possible to do for a perfect round? I normally just let the other player wail on me to build my Ultra gauge once I've taken most of their life bar away (and after I've completed at least 1 perfect match), then finish them off with an Ultra Combo.
 
yah I dunno what to tell you heh, you are obviously doing something wrong though 😛

i think i got like 2 perfects in a row, then 3 ultras, then didnt get any more perfect or ultra finishes.

i did it with ryu after i had beaten it with akuma.

I have beaten it with Akuma and Ryu already, so I suppose I'll train with Ryu and learn his Super and Ultra combos. Sagat is just such a beatdown machine that I really like to stick with him. He's slow, but he has huge vitals and hits like a beast.

eh you don't really have to learn crap, if you can do a fireball you can do his ultra. no need to learn his super.

and if you are doing more than just jump kick + sweep, rinse and repeat, to try to unlock the character, then you are doing too much.

I got him unlocked using Ryu tonight too. Apparently you can't just use anyone to unlock Gouken.
 
I unlocked him on both my PS3s using Akuma, you just have to beat it at least twice using him, or any other character for that matter.
