Okay.. I'm sitting in my room doing homework and I hear a pop sound - the familiar sound of a capacitor blowing somewhere. However, the sound also came through my speakers (at least it seemed to). Then, I smell burning.

So, I flip off my battery backups. And, I hit the surge surpressors.

After 30 minutes of not being able to tell which one it is, I turned everything back on. There's still a slight burning smell - but everything is working.

Here's what I had on:

My computer.. 350 watt Enermax power supply (5 years old)
My monitor.. Sony Trinitron G400
speakers.. Creative Inspire T5400
lights (2).. halogen desk lamps
router #1.. wireless G router - Linksys WRT54GS
router #2.. wireless B router - BEFW11S4
modem.. Motorola Surfboard SB5100
2nd monitor.. Planar 19" LCD
Belkin 7-port USB 2.0 hub
Belkin 4-port USB switch
print server.. Netgear FR114P
printer.. Brother HL1850
TV.. Magnavox 20".. 15 years old
scanner.. HP Scanjet 4600
UPS #1.. APC 500
UPS #2.. Belkin 800VA
alarm clock.. Emerson Research
battery charger.. Radio Shack special
Replay TV 4500

Now it's all on again.. and it all seems to work fine.. WTF

cliff notes:
- flying kazoos

The popping through your speakers could be anything. My speakers pop when I turn the lights in my room on.

I also have a Sony G400.

I love this monitor.. I hate Sony, but I love this monitor. It's so perfectly clear.

i vote for speaker amp or maybe a motherboard. load up a software base function generator and start a slow sweep, maybe a fried crossover.

UPS can burn you house down, check the batteries every 3 months.

I just replaced the batteries in my UPS.

The batteries nearly exploded. Three of the four were actually melted together.
