ARGH! Stupid techs

For those who haven't been playing our home game, I'm a Product Specialist/L2 for Dell Home/Small Business Dimension tech support at an outsource. Basically, I'm tech support for the techs.

This wonderful example of why I'm leaving this lovely job calls into the L2 queue, and asks how to copy the Win95 setup files from the CD to the hard drive to do an install. The L2 she got gives her an example of how to use the DOS COPY command. She manages to not understand the example, and calls back in, getting me. I tell her "Type copy D:\win95\*.* C:\win95". She calls back, gets me again, and informs me I gave her the wrong command. I ask her to tell me exactly what she typed. "copy D:\win95*.* C:". I inform her that is not what I told her, and she procedes to tell me I'm lying to her and she keeps getting different answers every time she calls. I give her the correct command, AGAIN, and send her on her merry way, and go on break.

How is it these MORONS manage to get through training without a basic understanding of the rather simple DOS COPY command?

Everyone should at least know some basic DOS commands I think.

I'm happy that I showed my one friend (who isn't super computer-savvy, but isn't dumb) the basics when he got a 386 from someone.

<-- looks to his right and pulls out Microsoft Dos 6 User's Guide. Right next to my MS Windows Users Guide (3.1 guide)

Sounds like one of those techs that thinks of it as "just another job". It should be fun :)

I pity people that have never used DOS. I do network support for a living and you woudl be amazed at the number of other network techs that have never seen much less used DOS. Don't even get me started on the desktop support guys....I say something about DOS or OS/2 around them and they look at me like I'm speaking Swahili.

I got in just when Windows 95 was starting to be a little popular (Summer '96), and DOS was still needed for some programs. I had some close calls with AOL, but finally broke free after a while. Had I gotten a computer a year later, I could be a total moron and not even be here.

Damn. Any tech should know some basic dos commands. I started out with a 286, so I know a good deal of useful commands (prolly forgot them by now ;)).

If they start to insult you, recommend them to buy this books. Dos for Dummies or PC for Dummies.

GAH! I was just asked if I would help close tonight. I was stuck doing it last night (was here an hour and 15 minutes late), was scheduled for the night before so I closed that night, and I'm scheduled to close tomorrow. I had to threaten to quit to get them to even LOOK for someone else. This is outright absurd.

I tried using copy once. The version of it that win98 puts on the standard boot disk isn't recursive so it wont do sub-directories. You would have to use XCOPY.. except thats not even there.

COPY has never been recursive. xcopy should have been on your win98 CD in the win98 directory.

But either way, you managed to figure it out. This "Technical Support Representative" couldn't figure out that you need to put a slash between the directory and the files you want to copy.
