The only legal way is with the original disks/key. If he didn't get one from the place he bought it from, I would be willing to bet that he has an illegal OS running. Tell him to take it up with them or to buy a new OS. This is not your fault and not your problem. If you don't get the customer to understand that, he's going to keep walking all over you.

One thing I forgot to mention: for the particularly stupid customers like this one, write the cd key on their case with a sharpie so they can't lose it.

It's also amazing you mentioned an engineer. One time, this software engineer for IBM took his computer to CompUSA to have his power supply installed. I asked him what was the problem as I was walking out and he need the PSU installed. He had all the tools too. I installed it in like 2 mins. When I found out he was working for IBM, I even questioned why he didn't know how to do this. It's amazing how they work for a big computer company like IBM and don't jack on how to fix their computers.

He, like myself, is a Civil Engineer.
I once removed a virus and install a new hard drive for my brother in-law who works for the government as a network security architect. And, about 5 years ago he asked me how to stop some one hacking into their server (they were hacked for over 2 weeks & was lost approximately 2.6 GBs of data before they even noticed it).

It doesn't mean that a person know everything if they work as an engineer, because there are thinkers and there are doers, and then there are a few that are both thinker & doer.

[edit] It turn out that someone turn a government server into an mp3 & wares box.

Yes exactly. Next thing you know an old not so great friend will call you up and make small talk and then be like " oh yeah, so my aunts computer is having trouble with ..."

I will help: mom, dad, brother, girlfriend. that is all.
