Argh, dammit, when will someone come up with a bios flashing system that doesn't require a floppy??!?!

MSI has a web based bios update... it actually workes pretty well too though I'm more comfortable with the old fashioned floppy method

couldn't u actually do it with a zip if ur mobo supports booting to zip? or cd also (via burning a bootable cd)?

You can flash your BIOS off your HD just as easily.

There are even Windows based BIOS flash utilities (Like I trust them

As far as I know, DOS only came on floppies. If I had DOS to install, I'd jsut format one of the DOS disks.

if your system is win9x, you can boot up in "safe mode with command prompt only" (hit F8 when it starts booting), and you can safely flash bios from there. I did that several time before without any problem. I think you can do it with win2K, too.

Dell BIOS updates can be done in a hard drive mode from within windows....however...that dosen't work so well 🙂

Somehow, it strikes me that being able to flash the BIOS from within Windows is kind of scary from the virus aspect.

If you don't want to use a Windows based flasher which many people have mentioned, you just have to find a way to get into DOS-mode. One method I haven't seen mentioned is to boot from a copy of Win95/98 on CD (it should be bootable). When it gets to the menu, just choose "Continue booting without CD-ROM support" as opposed to continuing with the OS install. This will get you to the command prompt.

Remember, the first thing you need to do is to put the BIOS file and flash utility into a temporary folder on your HD. After you've booted from the CD, just chdir to the folder on your C: drive and run the flasher.
