Do not allow yourself to get derailed while at work. Stay focused on the job. You seem to need to learn how to manage people in their interactions with you.

If someone is posting too much while you are busy, you tactfully manage them by politely excusing yourself so you can get back to work.

Fixed. I politely excused myself after reading this far into this post. :p

I discovered awhile ago that these things very rarely turn out well. For every 1 person who is somewhat appreciative and understands your time etc there are 9 who treat you and your time like you're the best buy geek squad.

A long time ago I started politely refusing to do work outside the office (don't have time etc) and my life is 10x better. No more Friday 8pm "my kid has to print something and you helped fix our computer 3 years ago we have nowhere else to go blah blah" crap..

In my opinion this stuff is never, ever worth it unless you don't have a full-time job and have no issues with how valuable your time is or you're planning on doing consulting type stuff (FYI - 'home users' will really violate your phone time unless you start making it billable)

It took about 3 years before I stopped getting random calls from people I'd helped. Actually I believe it was changing my number for work that ultimately stopped it

Ha - my mom is very smart, but she's willing to try accupuncture, etc. just as a pain relief method, not a cure. I don't live with my mom, I'm 29 and married but I do feel awful that she suffers from arthritis and thought it could be a win/win situation. Heck, I was hoping my mom could get a nice massage out of it, and to ignore the hippy b.s.. He didn't even do that, he chanted over her which was a complete waste of her time - and she's retired!
Can't he just chant at his Mac to make it work properly? You'd think that a simple collection of millions transistors, capacitors, and magnetic fields would be easier to manipulate than billions upon billions of cells.

Good old placebo-based superstitious medicine.:D

Weird reply from him, since I completely mentioned that I'd finish the web site:

,

Although I'm sure your worth every penny, if I would have known your services would be so expensive, and that you would not want to barter, than I would have not offered you a contract. I simply wouldn't be able to afford you right now. So no, I'm not interested in pursuing this contract. No need to pay for the session. Hope your mom gets what she needs.

Sorry about the misunderstanding,

if the fact that he's a "new age healer" and that his mac has a virus doesn't ring a bell to you, then i think you kind of brought this whole ordeal upon yourself...

Your maintained the stance of dominance and put him in his place. GJ.

Exactly, now send the prick a professionally printed invoice for some obscene amount of money, and then threaten to turn it over to collections if he doesn't pay by Friday.

I'm only posting to mention how impressed I was with your email. Professional, clearly conveyed points.

Also, his reply enrages me ("your" vs. "you're", "than" vs. "then"), so I'm glad he misunderstood you.

I was thinking the exact same thing. OP's co-worker scares me.

I actually like doing free IT stuff for people. Am not in IT and am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but the man with one eye is the king the in the land of the blind. I figure I gotta find a way into heaven somehow.

A few weeks ago, one of the other attorneys in my office asked me a computer question. I was not exactly in the mood, so I mocked her a bit. She screamed "fuck you!!!" at me and stormed out of the room. After giving her the silent treatment for a while, I began speaking with her again.

Last week this attorney was talking with our shared assistant about some computer problem she was having. As I handed something to our assistant, the attorney directed a statement about her problem to me. I looked at her, said "Hmm?" and walked into my office. It was a very gratifying feeling ;)

Her IT privileges are revoked.

True. Fixing that guys computer is like using a defibrillator on a decapitation victim.

Anyway, just tell him you got in a car accident and damaged the part of your brain that does IT.

It was a trojan and, yes, his browser history was clear when I looked. I'm guessing he visits .. Specialty.. Websites.. At the end of the day, I was impressed that he knew how to clear his browsing history, especially since he didn't know how to export his hotmail address book ("Click EXPORT").

Hey freedomsbeat212, are you both in the office today?

Any weirdness between the two of you? Or are you guys avoiding each other? Skirting the issue and moving on?

Your post intrigued me, and I'm currently subscribing to your newsletter. :)

He hasn't been in the office for 2 days. I'm not sure if he's out sick, though I completely assume he'll be cold and distant, but I don't even care anymore. Visited my mom yesterday and she said "he's a jack ass, you don't need him his good will."
