ARGH CANADA CUSTOMS

Dangerer

Golden Member
Sold my phone on ebay last month and shipped it to the winner in Canada. The dude paid with paypal promptly and was curteous throughout the entire transaction. I shipped it out via usps global priority with tracking and insurance. fast forward today, 45 days later. THE PHONE IS STILL SITTING IN CUSTOMS. (according to the USPS website tracking webpage)

I've been trying to contact various sources to get the phone released from customs but it seems no one is willing to release any info, the people working for usps said I am SOL if it's sitting in customs as they have no information whatsoever for me. The buyer has been patient so far as we've both been looking for a way to release the phone from customs. For the most part he understands i've been working towards a solution even though i've gotten pretty much no where. The guy hasn't made contact with me in a few days now, so i'm worried he's going to file a chargeback behind my back. This option is 100% available to him considering his account was unconfirmed (I KNOW, but i had no idea what unconfirmed meant till recently)

has anyone else been in this situation? what choices do I have?

Wow that sucks! I've got stuff from canada before but it didn't take more than a few days longer than usual. Why didn't you use Fedex or UPS?

happens once in a while. it's usually not a problem though. sometimes they try and fvck me around a bit with tax/duty

knowing revenue canada, theyre putting a $200 investigation into the value of the phone, so they can tax him $20 on it, and somehow they figure they're coming out ahead.

Should have hired someone from Centra/South America or the Taliban to transport it for you. They wouldn't have gotten a second look and the buyer would have the phone by now.

Should have shipped using a private carrier. I did all my shipping to/from Canada that way, and those must grease the palms of Customs or something, because everything cleared fast.

What, like UPS or Fedex? They rape you on brokerage fees for clearing customs for you. I paid $50+ on $200 worth of computer goods once b/c of UPS. 🙁

USPS is generally the best way to ship into Canada.

Agreed. USPS is what I've heard to be the best. How much insurance did you put on it and how much did you declare the item to be? Did you mark it as gift?

Whenever anything is shipped between the US and Canada, there's always a chance of it being held at the border. Most times, it isn't held up, but nobody should be surprised if it ever is.

They rape you on fees because your things get there on TIME. Actually, my customs fees were not high at all.

Get there on time maybe after you jump through hoops. My mom sent me Xmas gifts and fedex sent me a bunch of forms to fill out on gifts which I had no knowledge of. I had to fill out a "textile importation" form on a homemade cross-stitch (!?!?!) and some other form for a two bowls (?!?!? again) It took two days of faxing back and forth untill it got sent to me and then they tried to charge me $54. Told mom never to ship Fedex accross the boarder again.

God, that sucks...
one of my friends got a 3200 Venice from these forums right here on anandtech in June or July... still doesn't have it.. almost November. I'm thinking it's pretty much gone... what a freaking PITA!!!!!

Not worth it at all. 🙂 I'm not sure what your experiences have been, but UPS and Fedex are a nightmare for anything short of actual business transactions where cost isn't an issue anyway.

I don't remember what i marked it as, I told the USPS lady that it was a high priced phone and i'd like insurance for $300 on it. She complied and mailed it out for me. Here I am, more than 60 days later, you would think they would return the phone back to me by now

I bought a couple of Lego sets back around Jan 1st, one from Britain and one from Canada. I'm in the USA.

The one from Britain I got a week and a half ago. The one from Canada still hasn't arrived.
