just installed it about 3 hours ago and this game rocks, my rig was able to have all settings maxed out except i had to run "high quality" with no AA. And i thought this game was supposed to be optimised :( :p

oh well me likes :D

i tried to run Ultra high with x2 AA, but the stutters were just to bad, even though it is OCed aswell, hmm looks like a new GFX card might be in order for xmas, as i have already got the DFI expert on the cards when that is released.

Ok so i have a question would a 7800gtx or gt be able to run this sort of game at max settings, (my LCD monitor highest res is 1280x1024 @75hz ?LG L1980Q?) ??

ohh and im yet to buy F.E.A.R i wonder what impact this will have on my setup :(

really

i didnt know that, so at the moment ATI can only offer good performance at that settings, hmm ill have to wait and see what nVidia release, as i dont want to stump myself with an ATI card on an NF4 platform if i want to run SLI in the future, or dual GFX cards.

Probably with the textures... Ultra would probably mean uncompressed textures, and you need extra RAM power for that. Still, you have a 7800GTX... and you run on high settings. Stop complaining! I'll probably be able to run on low settings. =P

The thing that annoys me is theres more to Ultra Quality than using TGA textures instead of compressed DDS. I swear some subtle effects are turned off aswell, the kind of things that wouldnt even register on a 7800GTX's performance. I've already whined about it; but its compleatly warped that High Quality, a setting that doesnt make a 128mb 6800 whince, is the max you can play it on a 7800GTX without a hiccup. They should have made settings far more controlling with things such as "Uncompressed Textures" , rather than this 4 settings for people we regard as retards junk.

I doubt you would be able to tell the difference between High and Ultra settings so why bother? Just use High Quality + AA instead (or higher res if your mon can handle it)

they also said Doom3 Ultra needed a 512 card but A256 meg 6800 GT can man-handle Ultra setting at 1680x1050. Oh and BTW, F.E.A.R. will be putting that 6800 Ultra of yours through a serious beating at 1280x960 or above using max settings. On my 6800 GT I run 1024x768 fine but any higher and I'm bantha fodder

It's been proven that a 512MB 6800 Ultra doesn't run Doom 3 @ Ultra settings any better than a 256MB version would. 512MB for Ultra quality is really just a gimmick for the Geforce 6 series; maybe for the XL 512MB would help a bit but only because ATI X8xx series sucks in OpenGL . . . maybe its different for Quake 4 but probably not . . .

ive got a 6800Ultra (see sig), and I run Q4 with High settings @ 1280x1024, 2xAA. FEAR is a bit worse: high/maximum settings (light volume @ medium, soft-shadows off) @ 1024x768, 2xAA 4xAF. It still gets choppy in some areas (not always large, wide-open areas either), and in some gun fights (could be my soundcard though, the m-audio's just aren't for gaming hehe).

I would get a 7800GT if the budget allowed it (and if you have a pci-e mobo).

Actually you should see the Quake 4 benchmarks from FiringSquad. The X1800XT tears it up and is about equal to SLI'd 7800GTs.

I have. I said that 512MB is useless for Geforce 6 series, which it is for Doom 3 engine. The R5xx is a completely different animal but even there I suspect the 1.5 Ghz mem is doing more for it than the extra framebuffer . . .
