Just a side note to whoever said NTFS is incompatible with linux..... Linux kernel 2.2.17 definitly supports reading NTFS partitions (mounted as read-only). The write support is experimental and they are suppose to have it complete for the 2.4.0 kernel.

I think its a IBM issue from my experiance. I also have problems getting Win2k to see the IBM 75 gpx drives off the Promise Ultra 66 for a install. I have to put them on a standard ide controller to install Win2k the setup all the hardware and drivers, then I remove the hardrives from the device mananger, power down and connect them to the Ultra 66 and everthing is fine. Win2k will not start the install process with the IBM drives connected to the Promise but Maxtor and Western digital drives install fine. I also cant get the Ibm drives to run in udma off the Intel ata 100 storage ide controller in Win2k but the Maxtor and Western digital drives run fine off that controller. I have tried knocking the IBM drives down to ATA 4 with the Ibm drive ultility but still no luck. I have got all my drives to run fine in win2k but I had to jump through a few hoops to get everthing running right. Thats is just my opinion and experiance with the Ibm 75 gpx drives in Win2k.

I said it was "unacceptable", which it is. However, I will give you that it sounds like I say it's incompatible. I guess if you only want to read data, then fine, maybe I'd trust it to. Probably not though. I've seen too many people say how horrendous linux support for NTFS is to call it "acceptable". OTOH, FAT32 supoort is great and I use it in my samba box that houses a 45 GB FAT32 drive w/ mp3's etc.

Is there any way to try it on another computer? If so, and if you can see it in at least DOS, then you can reset the drive to ATA 33 (or ATA 66, depending on your controller and OS). Then you'll probably see it.

The drive ships as ATA 100. My BIOS DID see it but I had major problems as you can see. Windows 2000 wouldn't see it until its setting agreed with the speed it was running at. (Ie. Running at ATA 33 and set as ATA 66 didn't work.) Windows 98 worked as long as it was not set as ATA 100.
