<< but I spend $80 and I have to jump through hoops >>

Since OEM full install and retail upgrade are both about $99, I'd be wondering about the product you bought. It is either grey market, or the vendor lost money selling it to you.

<< It was shrink wrapped >>

It's easy enough to re-shrink wrap a returned product. Shady businesses do it all the time.

<< he tried to run a crack on XP, but the crack didn't work right, so then he tried to activate it >>

Clearly, you're ranting about Microsoft when it was not their problem.

OK, I'm gonna answer all the questions in one post. Looks like I have a few questions.

<< you have to wonder if the original poster actually had to send in physical proof. >>

Whether they are required to require me to send the stuff in or not, I did. I ended up calling back today to get the fax number again, to which I faxed the copy of the box, copy of the front of the CD, and the copy of the folder with the CDkey on the back. After I had faxed it in I called back and spoke to another guy who was obviously clueless of what my specific situation was. (by coincidence, I had spoke to the same original CSR three times). So he didnt know what was going on and after a short hold, came back and just gave me an installation ID anyways. <shrug>

<< You have a copy of Windows XP with license for one workstation which you have your own activation code. You have attempted an unauthorized installation on other workstation(s) and Microsoft isn't granting you an activation code for the second workstation. Correct?
>>

Read my post again. I never said I had it installed on more than one computer at a time, or installed on 2 computers at all.

<< Ummm, in case anyone didn't click over to the thread he mentions in the OS forum, he tried to run a crack on XP, but the crack didn't work right, so then he tried to activate it.

I'll lay 100-1 odds that the crack is what screwed the date up back to November 31st, it would be just like a crack team to trick the OS by telling it that it was activated on 11-31...

So all this Microsoft bashing is sort of unfounded, since if he had just tried to activate it properly in the first place, there would be no problem.
>>

I clearly linked the thread and took full responsibility (and shame) for what I did. The crack does not set the date back, it was designed to replace the logon file with a version that did not have activation check, and also to reset a 14 day timer in some of the beta releases. (this is how it was explained to me, Im not a cracker. ;) ) However, this was worked around by microsoft apparently in the retail release. What was happening was that the crack put the "old" winlogin file on, but the final release OS (which I had) was either detecting this or rejecting the command from the older file, which spit me right back to the login screen....basically a loop no matter what I did. It did not set the date back to the 31st, for I had rebooted 5-6 times trying to "get it to work" before the 30 days finally ran out. Before I got locked out both OS and BIOS showed the correct time. The "bashing" is not unfounded, though you are correct I could have avoided it by going "legit" in the first place. I never tried to hide that folks. :)

<< Hmm... I auctally have the pleasure (NOT) of working in the microsoft activation call center. Before you start screaming at me though, I haven't worked since thursday so it wasn't me the dude talked too! Hehe... anyways, I think the original poster must be leaving some info out. Because the ONLY time you have to fax in proof of purchase/receipts etc, is when say you bought the software from your buddy and when you called into activate, it had his name in it. Then we'd need some proof to activate.

As long as you have a "legit" reason to reactivate like... reinstalling windows, new hardware, new harddrive.... thats no problem. The minute the csr hears the magic word "reinstall" it's over, no questions asked hehe... it'll be activated. If you want windows xp on more than one computer, just say that you're "reinstalling" for crying out loud lol. But you didn't hear that from me...

Poster... (sorry i forgot your handle, and I'm too lazy to look back for it)... did you happen to remember the person's name you talked too? I'm just curious if I know them hehe.
>>

Look, Im not leaving anything out. When I called to activate it (after taking care of the problem caused by me trying to crack it :) ), I was told that it had already been activated, and he gave me the 11/31 date. I said thats impossible, I only bought it recently. He said in that case, I would need to confirm proof of purchase, which involved me faxing in this morning a)copy of box b)front of CD and c)CD key on back of brochure/folder that the CD was in. In case you would like to verify what happened, I talked to Chris W. Thats all I know. I have his fax number if you would like but I assume its a pooled number.

<< good job, you happened to magically "leave out" the crack part on this post

so technically it's probably your fault for screwing around with it
>>

No I didnt, I clearly linked to the thread discussing what I did. If you had read the whole post and the link that I posted, then you would have known this. Its not my fault that microsoft thinks for whatever reason I already activated it. :)

I bought it at a local academic bookstore where my GF works. It was $99-20% discount=80 bucks. Whether they lost money or not is not relevant to me. :) You're point about shrink wrapping is noted, as I already knew that. But this bookstore is actually a fairly well respected store, I know the manager, my GF works there, and this bookstore was chosen by my alumni to be their "online bookselling partners". Its possible it was returned and re-shrinkwrapped, but I have no reason to suspect so.

While I did and do admit fault in trying to bypass their activation system, I stand by my earlier statements that the crack could not and did not cause the problem of microsoft thinking I activated it before I actually bought it.
