ARG !!! Win XP and Harddrives larger than 137 gig

I'm loading Win XP on a 160 gig drive and I'm running into this limitation. I'm using a pre SP1 copy of XP so it appears I'm between a rock and a hard place. I've searched the MSKB and can find nothing about installing XP on such a drive.

Anybody know how I can get around this ? I thought about formating the HD at the default size and then applying SP2 after the OS load but somehow, this doesn't seem like it will work, I'll still have a 137gig HD.

Thanks

Thanks, Did a search and found another thread on this. Somebody posted a link to a program that slipstreams a SP into the CD. I just finished doing this and I'm now going to load XP again. Stay tuned. 😀

EDIT: It was Canterwood that posted the link to AutoStreamer. Thanks Dude. 🙂

OK, I'm over the hump. The HD is being formated at the proper capacity.

Canterwood, you da man. 😀

Absolutely.

Another easy way (that works with win2k too) is to use an add on ATA controller....windows will treat it as a SCSI device and there will be no 137GB limit.

Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Windows 2000 SP3 add support for 48-bit Logical Block Addressing (LBA), which lets you access hard disks larger than 137GB. To enable 48-bit LBA, perform the following steps:

1. Open the registry editor: Start > Run > regedit.exe.
2. Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Parameters\ registry subkey.
3. From the Edit menu, select New, DWORD Value.
4. Enter the name EnableBigLba, then press Enter.
5. Double-click the new value, set it to 1, then click OK.
6. Close the registry editor.
7. Restart the computer to apply changes.

Be aware that if you multiboot your system with OSs that don?t support 48-bit LBA, editing this registry setting might cause data corruption. If you still can?t access hard disk space beyond the 137GB limit after you restart your system, your system BIOS might not be 48-bit LBA compatible, in which case you need to talk to your computer manufacturer.

This helped for me
