ARG!!! I/O on boot

I put a new HDD (30 gig) into an old computer (Sony PCV-90, 200 mhz, etc). DOn't ask why, but that's what my dad wanted. Anyway, I installed win98 on the HDD on another computer because it was faster. I turned off the computer after it told me to restart, and brought the drive downstairs to the Sony. I stuck it in, the system posts, and then I/O error. First off, what does that mean? The drive works fine in the computer upstairs. Secondly, could this be because the controller on the motherboard needs an update? I looked to see if there were any new BIOSes but according to intel's site the product has been discontinued.

Intel AG430HX - Motherboard
national semiconductor pc87306b - I/O controller

Any ideas? Please help! 😀

You can't just install Win98 on a whole different computer, swap the HD and then expect Win98 to work on the other computer, it WON'T (99.99% of the time) work!

to clarify, windows doesn't work well after you switch mobos. it can handle any other hardware changes just fine usually, but if you swap mobos, you often get issues.

edit: when exactly are you getting this error?

Your problem is that that board doesn't support drives larger than 8GB. You are asking it to read a partition table on a drive that it can't read properly.

You can either repartition it and live with an 8GB drive or you can add a PCI drive controller.

The above issues about swapping motherboards will still remain.

ah, if this is the case, check for a BIOS update

Thanks for the advice. I thought that might be the problem (the controller can't read partitions larger then 8 gigs). As for the win98 install; it doesn't make a difference. I installed it but did not let it actually configure itself, just copy the necessary files. Thus it will never know the difference between the two motherboards.
