Arent gift cards as tacky as cash for a present?

Okay, there *might* be some thought put into gift cards for best buy. As far as Red Lobster (as mentioned above) or any other food place, what the heck kind of thought went into that? "Hmmm. He eats. I know, I'll get a gift certificate to a restaurant. That way, he can use it to eat. That'll be special." The only thoughts that would be relevant would be "he's allergic to seafood."
