AN ENTERPRISING surfer has found a way to harness Google's new mapping facility to uncover the secrets of Area 51.
The American military base, in the Nevada desert, is steeped in history and rumour - allegedly being the place where all of Uncle Sam's work with extra-terrestrials and physics-defying technology takes place. The place is so heavily guarded, it's almost impossible to get within miles of it.

However, with satellite map technology, you can uncover some pretty spectacular pictures of the base, including some interesting structures in and around it that can't quite be identified.

If you want to go take a peek around Area 51 for yourself, have a look at this illustrated guide here. It's a fascinating read.

Homeland security? We've heard of it. µ

Those green circles, would they be for irrigation? Thought I remembered seeing circular irrigation at one time or another from some school book way back.

Hasn't this satellite imagery been available on other networks for years now? I could've sworn people had already done this with Mapquest, Terraserver, etc.

Either way, those green ovals aren't unique to that area. Not quite sure what they are or why the field is planted that way, but somebody on another forum was posting a link to their house out in one of the plains states and a lot of the fields there looked exactly like that.

Nah, it's the playground for the baby aliens. It's mini crop circles.

That's neat. Those "hills" or "bumps" or whatever in the last few pics aren't natural. They're in perfect formations. They're lined up perfectly in a grid. Neat. :)

area 51 really isnt a secret anymore. what goes on there is the secret. they just deny it exists so they dont have to say what goes on there.

The green things are irrigated farms to sustain the base in a doomsday scenario, IIRC. Read about them once.

The bumps are decommed weapons bunkers; they hide nukes in those things after they take them apart. They have them on several bases in the region, it's no secret, nor a surprise that Groom Lake is one of them.

when you zoom in on them they look as if they are spots where planes have tested bomb's and droped them there.

They'd NEVER do anything important at Area 51 anymore, too many eyes watching the skies around it. There are plenty of other suspect locations in the region that recieve nowhere near as much noteriety. The government just continues to play up Groom Lake because it keeps the conspiracy theorists away from the real deal.

One thing to keep in mind is that the orbit of satellites is known and they follow extremely predicable paths. You can bet that the US Gov knows at what time what satellite will be overhead. Knowing that, they'll make sure that any secret aircraft is inside the hangar by that time.

Don't you think in a doomsday scenario a big green field would get "doomed" also? What kind of doomsday scenario favors exposed green fields over canned food and bottled water?

Actually... There was one incident where they were caught with SOMETHING that looked vaguely like a plane being lifted by a crane on the runway. Resolution back then was piss-poor, though, so you can't see much :p

I would think that if we had any secret base, it would be in Alaska or on an island in the pacific. In fact, the government owning a small island in the pacific would be a possibility.
