Today we had a huge argument on whether Random Traffic stops(where the cops make a road block and randomly pull peopel over and give them drug tests and such)

Are you pro or con? Got anything to back your position up?



I am kinda pro because hell, you shouldn't have been driving under the influence of "that" specific substance anyway...

WHat do you guys think?
 
its called reasonable cause

if i don't look like i'm doing anything wrong, and you have no reason to think i am, then leave my ass alone.

And when the cops come waltzing through your house looking at whatever they want to, don't worry if you haven't done anything wrong.
 
I'm only pro if it happends to other people. I don't want to be pulled over and given a drug test with no decent reason and wasting my time.
 
I've never been stopped, frankly because they have to annouce what they are doing beforehand and its usually on the news and more than likely always done on a 'drinking' holiday weekend..most people avoid the area in that case..but if i were stopped, it wouldnt bother me, if you've done nothing wrong you've got nothing to worry about
 
Con. I think it's a very poor way to deal with drunk driving and drugs, since you must invade the privacy of citizens doing nothing wrong. It would prove effective against some drunk drivers, I'm sure, but if I was making the call I'd chose another tactic...

Giving police that much power would upset the delicate balance between authority and liberty. It's very similar to our ideal of innocence until proven guilty. Police cannot stop you for the hell of it. They must have cause. Cause might include driving on the road at 2AM on New Year's Eve (sobriety check). But cause is not stopping people on the freeway in the morning for a random drug check. NO WAY NO HOW!

I have never seen a checkpoint for drugs.

Sobriety check points I see frequently on holiday weekends. I'm totally for it. If an officer stops you and speaks with you (while pointing his flashlight with the breathalyzer on the end) and sees you've been drinking, get your arse off the road! I don't want to be on the road with a bunch of drunks.

driving isn't a right, it's a privledge 😉
 
I remember when California passed a Law where Police could not ask for your Proof of Insurance. Because they would stop every Mexican they saw just to harass them about their insurance. All random stops will do is create more discrimination.

Oh really? Then how about checking for:

driving while eating
driving while applying makeup
driving while reading a map
driving while chatting on the phone
driving while slapping the kids in the back seat
driving while emotionally wrecked
driving while sleep deprived

I mean, let's just pull everybody over and see what freakin' problem they have today. :|
 
This is probably unconstitutional in some way. But, in todays day of age no one gives a flying leap about that anymore.

Sigh.

I fear the country has pretty much descended down that slippery slope a long while ago, and there is no turning back. In 50 years we'll be the United Police States of America. Just notice how groups like the NRA and other "constitutional idealist" groups are being vilified and public sentiment (which then allows some stupid congressman to get some stupid legislation passed), is slowly but surely turning towards the "Well, if you're not a terrorist/pot head/drug addict/drunk/etc. then you have nothing to worry about your rights being stripped away and violated!".

Bah. I need my own island. I just want to go back 100 or 200 years and live then, before the corporations started owning the damn country. 🙂
