Well, actually 9.8m/s/s is a measure of acceleration, not of speed, so there is nothing wrong with saying it is falling at 9.8m/s. However, unless it has reached the terminal velocity for a thread, it can only be falling at 9.8m/s for one infinitely small instance of time.
