Are you using any GTA IV mods?

I just started playing GTA IV on the PC yesterday, and the car handling is driving me crazy. It's obviously much more realistic than previous GTA games - suspension seems more realistic, you can't make 90-degree turns at 70 mph with a tap of the handbrake, etc. :) I'm considering modding the game to have more "arcade-like" car handling, and I'm wondering if anybody here is using any driving mods for GTA IV, what you're using, and how you like them?

I agree. They keep making driving LESS fun each game after Vice City.

People get pissed off at the driving in this game because they expect to be able to drive like they did in previous games. You're not required at any time to use your handbrake to make a turn at 70mph. Once you get the hang of it, there's nothing wrong with it, you just have to approach it differently.

Of course, I can see how it would bother some people, and if there are mods out there to change it, then feel free but it may make the game way too easy.

I would have to agree with coldmeat...

Once I got the hang of the drifting in this game it was just as fun as the other GTA's...it just takes some time to get used to the controls and how to use them...

Once you do, it is a blast and I actually found it gave me MORE control in driving even at high speeds

I like it :)

Makes you look for and keep good vehicles, because you can't just get in any old beater and drive quickly.

Drifting is awesome with more powerful vehicles

Well, these responses make some good sense - I think I'll hold off on the mods for now :)

I'm not that far into the game. I have noticed that I do go out of my way to keep decent cars. That is kinda cool. It's still annoying that it seems like you can't even turn a corner doing 30MPH in a shitty car.

For those of you who said you've gotten used to the car handling in GTA IV, I'm curious, what are you using for controls? I've been playing around with using the Xbox 360 controller for driving and mouse & keyboard for everything on foot. The 360 controller seems to make car handling a little better, since you can control the throttle and angle of turning more precisely.

Mouse & Keyboard. Although for driving I try not to use the mouse.

That's because you can't drive. ;P

I have no problems handling the cars. All the cars are different you have to adjust to each car. I'm using a gamepad of course. Driving with Keyboard sucks.

I'm completely comfortable with the driving controls using keyboard and mouse. I will say however that the rain is bullshit. Rain should not turn the ground into ice.

It took me a little while to get used to it, but I like the handling now. I use the keyboard and mouse. I like the ability to move the camera wherever I want with the mouse while driving. It works really well for doing drive-bys and keeping up with people your are chasing who are on foot. I tried the 360 controller once, fugitaboutit!

Driving w/ KB&M is fine. For handbraking, you can only tap it. Also, @ high speeds, start braking about 1/3-1/2 of a block from when you need to turn. Tourismos and Infernuses are awesome.

I haven't played GTA4 for PC yet, but since GTA3 I've been doing it that way: PSX gamepad for driving, KB/Mouse for on foot. I think it's almost the best possible configuration and I wish that I could use a KB/mouse for the ps3.

Driving with a keyboard sounds retarded. I wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy.

I had been trying to work out a system where I handled character movement with my left hand on the PS controller and the left analog stick, but still aimed with my right hand on the mouse, but the controls don't really allow that to work as well as I'd like. There's not enough available buttons to make it feasible. It'd be awesome however to have analog controls for movement and the precision that comes with aiming with a mouse..

Mouse aiming + gamepad movement is my own personal holy grail of gaming controls.. One day..

Driving is definitely more realistic in GTA4, but it's almost funner I think. The top 4 or 5 cars in the game still have great handling. Really hard to find those cars though...I played through the whole game and only drove a few Comets, a couple of Corvettes (or whatever they call them) and one infernus. Where are all the good cars at? I don't want mediocre stuff :p - Though using Cabs sure is a lot easier, as I didn't figure out for the first few days I had the game. I like driving around better though anyways to get used to driving and get to explore/find my way around the beautiful Liberty City.

I haven't seen a comet or infernus outside of the ones that are given to you over the course of the story. Since I didn't save either, neither spawns for me:( There is a dealership for turismos around the corner from the safehouse nearest the water on the 2nd island and a hidden SultanRS (my personal favorite) near that one boarded up mansion on the northern most tip of the 3rd island. There's also a motorcycle dealership on the 3rd island too.. But motorcycles seem severely gimped compared to San Andreas since you're so much more vulnerable, they aren't nearly as useful... or I guess I should say they're just much more difficult.

Hrm, so you have to park your car by your safehouse and save your game for the car to start spawning anywhere? Or at least appear more frequently? That would explain why I've seen very few of the 'best' cars. Was hoping getting Brucie to like me would result in him sending cars to me wherever I am, but that was not the case :p - Instead he offers some lame helicopter transportation that leaves you a mile high on top of a skyscraper most of the time.

I still think driving was the most fun in GTA1. Can't beat driving at 200mph and only being able to see about 5 car lengths in front of you!
