How do layoffs seem to sneak up on people? Maybe it's just me, but everywhere I've worked, you knew how the co. was doing.

Friend worked 19 years for Badcock furniture. Came in on a Monday morning and the corp sold the store to a dealer. Have a nice day.

I work construction, so no. I get laid off all the time.

Yeah but that gives you time to make your house nice.

I think of myself more as a butt plug...

This is why I hate every big company in the US.

THIS SHIT. Employee "ratings". Usually yearly ones to determine your pay/raise/bonus for the year. It's utter bullshit.

Theoretically, it is VERY much possible for EVERYONE to be working at an equal (or close to equal) rate. So everyone could be working like complete shitbags (*Cough*Any Government Jobs*Cough*), or everyone could be working at 110%. Well, that doesn't matter, because the company has a simple logic of: "We have 70% lvl 3's to give out, 10% lvl 2/4's to give out, and 5% lvl 1/5's to give out".

People keep praising Jack Welch, but he's the a*shole who introduced this sh*t.

I don't think anyone is ever too awesome to get laid off. The more money you make, the higher up on the expense list you are so when the company decides that their billions in profit was just not enough, they'll be looking at mass layoffs before cutting their own bonuses.

Though I guess the goal is to get high enough in the executive chain that you can have a nice contract when you're hired, so if the company does want to get rid of you, it'll cost them a few million in severance payoffs to do it.
