My kids are 10 and 12. I do not bring up politics with them yet. I'm not interested in destroying their childhoods with fears of things they cannot control, or trying to indoctrinate them into a specific partisan viewpoint.

I try to set a moral example for them to follow, and use any opportunity I can to teach them how to discern good information from bad information, knowing that if I can do those things then they will naturally lean progressive when they are old enough to decide for themselves.
But the line between partisanship and morality is at stake.

Chances are your child's behavior is already being manipulated by facebook, tik tok, etc.

Maybe sit down with her and watch "The Social Dilemma" on Netflix. My nephew watched it while he was in school a couple of years ago.

scary film

My son lives with me so yes indeed we both pay close attention and talk about it. He's the one with Bernie 2016 bumper sticker.
My mom has always been a dyed-in-the-wool Dem, and I turned out to be a Democratic Socialist so it's a pretty similar situation except with me being the kid.

Edit: Edited to add that if my daughter were alive, I would have been talking to her about politics from about the age of 10. She would not have been lacking in proper civics lessons.

14 and 11 here. Neither have social media but are prolific readers.

I don't bring up politics to them, but I answer questions about it honestly. Sometimes they hear talking points from their friends, want to run them by me.

Youngest doesn't care. Oldest still can't believe the orange menace is allowed to run for office, doesn't understand why people support such a person. I am fiercely proud of the bullshit detector this kid was born with. He's a skeptic without being ideological, he asks questions. *swoon*

Thanks. He's definitely doin me proud. Just had teacher/parent conferences, he's in a great place and his teachers rave about him in a way that damn near brings tears to my eyes. Came to highschool with a college level reading ability, just needs to focus on the math more. He's around seniors now, who are more political than the younger kids generally, so his level of exposure and engagement with current events is increasing. Old enough for his own phone now too. While I forbid social media apps on all platforms for my kids, he's free to frequent the newsphere. We had a talk about common propaganda techniques (Some People Are Saying, lying by omission, strawmannery, etc) and what real journalism is, also the role it's supposed to play in a constitutional democracy.

I try to tell him not to worry about this stuff though, to enjoy the next 3 years or so of not having to sully his mind with maga details that will destroy his faith in humanity. A lot happened when he was just a wee one, he should wait until he's allowed to swear before he catches up on it.

I'm sorry about your daughter Darth.

Hm...

The following table displays the percentage of Fortnite users in different age groups:

AgePercentage Of Fortnite Users
18 to 24 years62.7 %
25 to 34 years22.5%
35 to 44 years12.7%
45 to 54 years2%
More than 55 years0.1%

  • Almost 90% of Fortnite players are male. This large difference occurred since mobile games were banned.
  • 53% of Fortnite gamers are in the age group of 10 to 25 years.

That data doesn't seem to capture ages below 18 at all. I am guessing that 18-25 includes everyone down to toddlers. Only 10% of players are under 10? Seems pretty low.

It did say 53% are age 10-25?
They probably can't report finer data for under 18, not sure.

Even if they could report it, their birthdate data is voluntary. I suspect most people when creating accounts for their kids just create the account as an adult for their kids to use without restrictions.

I think my ultimate point is that there are probably more 18-25 Fortnite players than you're giving allowance for. Not sure how much this map will move any needles regardless.

I figured, but like, it was mostly said in jest anyway.

This is an excellent way to reach out to the youth vote without spending much, and it is probably more effective than more traditional outreach methods.
