are you still paranoid about DSL?

Nice conspiracy theory reference....great movie.
Fill us in! What movie?

OP: You are WAY too paranoid to be on the 'net.
conspiracy theory...duh

Batti: the movie is called Conspiracy Theory. It's good, if a bit whacked and disturbing at times.

And dpopiz: you're way too paranoid. What's going to happen if someone does hack in? give you a virus? steal your files? Unless you have kiddie porn there's really no reason to worry about that.

yeah.....I dunno, I guess I don't have any idea *what* somebody could do with my data, but I fear finding out.

I mean, I have all my different forum passwords...maybe I shouldn't care too much about those
I have my emails...and those have sensitive stuff like paypal receipts and such in them

I guess really what I'm worried about is identity theft, even the most minor. The thought of somebody else pretending to be me in any situation scares me. Should I really be that scared? What could happen if somebody got ahold of some "personal info" of mine?

Most idenity theft happens from stolen mail and people going through trash for important documents. Now, think of how many companies have your name and address for various reasons. Most of the time, there are a bunch of people at each company that could go right through that data and get credit card numbers, SS#, alternate addresses...

I hacked into your system yesterday and I found all your kiddie pr0n.
I would like to introduce you to your new friend, BUBBA, at federal pound-me-in-the-ass prison
😉

And you, sir, are a very bad man.

You remind me of my grandmother.

I recommend TrueCrypt, store all your documents and whatever in there and if anybody breaks in they won't see anything.

If you are truely paranoid then you can burn the truecrypt container to a cd/dvd and then just use it when you need it, this makes it completely useless for a hacker to get a hold of your true crypt password.

If all that doesn't impress you buy a second computer and keep it off the net altogther.

The few DSL connections I have seen in this town use a USB modem. There is no way to have a hardware firewall.

Mine connects via tcp/ip
I just run that to my smoothwall box. Not sure whether that old box has USB or not. Wonder if smoothwall can deal with that?

over the 3 years I've had DSL, I've become more and more paranoid about the security risks.

I use 158 unique logins for web sites that require them
I heavily encrypt everything, which makes my comp slow
even though sharing storage on the network would make my life a hell of a lot easier, I can't bear to do it

I'm driving myself crazy

I just wish there were some way I could be 100% that there are no leaks between my data and the Internet. but there always will be....

Hi, Dad!

if you really are that nervous, why dont you just get zone alarm and shutdown all internet traffic when you're not at your computer, it would be just like dial-up minus the connection time and the slow speeds.

Don't worry about it so much.

Somehow, someone got a hold on my bank card pin AND a copy of my card. I don't know how they did it, must've copied it while I was using interact at the counter or something.

Anyway, they spent over 3000 out of my savings account.

The bank picked up on it before I did, and reimbused me every penny. The worst that happened to me was having to go in to see the manager and sign a form.

Now, is there anything they can get on your computer that is worse than that?

Smoothwall can handle USB DSL modems. So you can have a dedicated firewall even with a USB modem.

For context, I work for a software company based in Redmond, Washington. I work in security support.

Personally, I think a healthy dose of paranoia is the hallmark of a good system administrator.

You may be taking it a bit further than necessary, but better too much than not enough paranoia when it comes to computer security.

I agree, but 158 unique logins, but then he worries about data leaks (which leads me to believe he doesn't have a firewall)? Seems like he's going about it the wrong way.

The piece of paper you keep those passwords on is probably a lot less secure than a compyter using just Norton Internet Security.

Edit: Now that I think about it, that's a lotta porn!!! 😉

** HISTORICAL FOOTNOTE: Aluminum was originally named "alumium" by Sir Humphry Davy, who later changed it to "aluminum" (perhaps in an attempt to make it more Latinized since alumen is Latin for alum, the aluminum compound that the name is derived from). The British (and allied English speakers) shortly thereafter changed the name once more, this time to "aluminium" so that it would again match the pattern of most other elements (helium, sodium, etc.), while the North Americans eventually decided to keep the second, slightly more traditional name. I predict that North Americans will adopt the more regular "-ium" spelling by the year 2050, prompting the British to start calling it "alumininium". At that point debate can begin on changing "platinum" to "platinium"

hehe

if you have a router and you're actively dealing in tons of information someone might care about (like running a buisness website with lots of credit card numbers on your comp) then you're probably fine.
