Are You Rude When You Travel?

I noticed a huge increase in rudeness here lately, especially while buying coffee and then I remembered that the tourist season was starting again and that this had happened every year.
I don't get it. I always try to be polite and I usually feel friendlier and more talkative than usual when I'm traveling on vacation.
Why are people rude to baristas and waiters while they're on vacation? Californians are by far the worst (at least the ones who want everyone to know they're from California) and Europeans seem to be the nicest.

edit: I did make a poll, but I'm not seeing it...

I'm almost always nicer on vacation, that is assuming I'm not stuck in the concentrated stupidity of the airport.

Are we rude on what??

Sounds like you just don't like Kahleeforneeyans, OR are projecting that someone who is rude MIGHT be from Kahleeforneeya...
Besides, baristas and waiters aren't really humans anyway...no need to be polite to the servants...;)

No, I was taught to be nice to everyone, especially strangers. It would take a lot for me to be outright rude to someone.

I try to be nice at all times but I'm a firm believer that there should be consequences for stupidity. I mean if stupidity isn't punished you're just re-enforcing it right?

I try to remain nice... If you're nice to me, I'm nice to you. If you disrespect me, I have no respect for you.

I remember my friends went to downtown Seattle with me for one of their birthdays, and they were taunting hobos on the streets. Since a guy didn't speak well, he just yelled. So my friends found it funny to taunt him by yelling hamburger and repeating the yell to the hobo. I ducked my head, and my friends thought I was a pansy. I lost respect for them a bit.

Of course, I WILL NEVER EVER GO BACK TO FLORIDA EVER.. EVER... I was at the Golden Corral Buffet, and I was going back to my table with food. This 10 year old cuban kid from a baseball team was blocking the way, but I thought I could slide thru. Instead, he bumps into me, turns around when I'm trying to get thru, and says "What the **** are you doing cabron?!"... I played asian tourist and yelled "sorry" and waved, then he apologized. But before that, everyone was looking at me and him since he apparently said it a bit too loud...

Some people do not know how to relax and enjoy themself. Vacations are great especially if you have no plan or schedule. I've found that most people are nicer if they know you are from out of town.

I've never heard an asian person reffered to as "cabron"... what does this mean?

Who goes on vacation to Ashland, OR?

Tourists

Tourists that must've seen the entire rest of the world because I can think of 1,000 places I'd rather go than Ashland, Oregon. That's probably they're in a bad mood...because they realize they're in Ashland, Oregon! :p

I'm generally very polite in real life.

I spent two summers in Phoenix, just north of Ashland. My Ph. D. research fieldwork area was from Medford to Yreka with a few bits of Cretaceous outliers up to Corvallis.

I try to be polite to the people that I meet. Treat people the way that you want to be treated. Plus, it doesn't take that much effort to be nice to people and the results from such behavior goes a long way.

It's unclear what you mean by "punished" and "consequences, but I tell you this: you are not the grand arbiter who decides what is stupid and how it should be punished. If you put yourself in that position, you're even worse than the other person. At least he has the excuse that he's stupid.

Trying to be nice isn't always easy, as I'm sure you've noticed. Sometimes you have to do something to be nice that would not be nice in a different situation. It takes wisdom and patience to know how to react. But that's the deal- if you want to correct people, you need to correct yourself first, or you're just a bigger part of the problem than they are.

"3 And why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, Let me remove the speck from your eye; and look, a plank is in your own eye? 5 Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye." Luke 7:3-5

I suspect that people that are rude to the waitstaff in their hometown are going to be rude on the road as well, likewise those that treat them decently at home will do the same when travelling. I don't see why it would change. I like talking to the locals, whether they be patrons or staff.

I also tend to tip better when travelling. Of course, it doesn't help when a cheapskate friend wants to stiff a waitress on a tip when she gave exceptional service despite being the only person covering twenty-five to thirty tables during the breakfast rush at a family restaurant in Canada. I mean, it's not like it was REAL money, it was CANADIAN money we were tipping with. ;) I had an ammo box full of American bills in the trunk, though.

Hell, I gave a cocktail waitress in Vegas a big tip just to make her smile, and because she reminded me of my fiancée. She was stuck waitressing the slot machine area that day, which had very few people in it and not many that were tipping. The gaming table area was the place to be as a waitress, especially around the blackjack and roulette tables. Lots of people, and most were more than willing to drop a five or ten dollar chip on the tray as a tip after they had just won a stack.

Why are people rude to baristas and waiters while they're on vacation?

Because they call themselves baristas.

Heh that was my first thought as well. For some reason that term really bugs me.

Shakespeare festival?
Well there's your problem. The sorts of people that attend Shakespeare festivals are rude no matter what. Concentrating them in one place is never a good idea.
