i don't know what they might mean by "fit" but i work out at least 5 times a week and i'm a very active beach person: swimming, scuba diving, volleyball and soccer. i don't have any more spare time to be more fit than that.

I used to be. Was one of the better bike racers in the southeast back in college. Have kinda let myself go in the past year or so. Cycling takes a tremendous amount of time to really get fit (15-20 hours per week is not unreasonable) so I've been having a hard time finding time to train lately.

You judge:

run: 5-10 miles/week

bike: 60-100 miles/week

swim: up to 500 yards/week (gimme a break, the water is cold!)

Resting Heart Rate: 50 bpm

I read somewhere that you had to do at least 20min of intense cardio a day to be in good health.

Hmmm... now that I think about it, resting heart rate could be a pretty good indication of fitness. I don't remember exactly, but I think somewhere around the area of 55bpm is considered very good. I lift and play basketball every other day, but I still need to throw some running into the mix as well. Even though I'm 6'1" 170lbs, By bpm is still around 60-62 which is only average.

I like to think so... I don't always get the chance for exercise because alot of the activities I am into are like team sports, and if my friends don't wanna go out and play for a while, I can't... which sucks.

Ultimate frisbee for one.. soo much fun, but sometimes not everyone wants to play.. its boring with 2 ppl......

Heart rate isn't really that good of an indicator. My girl friend and I both have resting heart rates between 55 and 60 and we don't one minute of exercise...unless you count sex :)

I think that exercise has a very strong effect on your resting heart rate, but so does exercise. Check the heart rate of someone that drinks two pots of coffee a day and smokes a pack and a half of cigarettes. Now that's scary!

Am I missing something here?

Anyway, any fitness test will have it's exceptions. You are definitely one of them. People with messed up blood pressure and hypertension and all that would be another exception. But as far as I can tell, it's probably the best all around "fitness" test. Definitely better than fat levels or how much you can bench (which doesn't really tell us much except that if we ever need someone to lift some heavy boxes we should ask you to lie on the floor and lift them). The great thing about it is that your heart doesn't lie. It beats pretty regularly for those non-excessive stimulant people. Now those people (like me) who post bpms (much like weight) on this forum DO LIE. So I guess the general rule of thumb is to just add 5 beats to anyone who post's their bpm and you'll get their REAL BPM ;)

i'm not fat, but my muscles and joints and everything inside of me is just messed up. (if running is considered physically fit, im DEFINATELY not, but asthma contributes to that one)

im 5'7"
an 112lbs(yeah...im not REALLY anorexic, i just don't have the time, nor care to eat very much:))

I'm 6'5" and ~ 290lbs,...yeah I have a gut, but I still consider myself to be in pretty good shape. My job, (nurse) requires me to lift some pretty hefty people sometimes. I've have them as heavy as 550lbs, but never have really hit my limit on being able to do what I need to do for them. (ie, move them from one bed to another, assist them in walking etc...)

I guess if you feel good and can do everything that you want to do when you want to do it, you're in good enough shape.

Yup. Resting heart rate is a pretty individual thing...just like max HR (although as a general rule a fit person will have a lower resting rate than an unfit one). A much better test of aerobic fitness (not bench press) is a VO2 max test. This basically indicates how much oxygen your body can process per minute per kilo of body weight. IIRC, an average sedentary person will clock in around 50 ml/kg/min. Someone like Lance Armstrong (3 time Tour de France winner for those of you living under rocks) may have a VO2 max of 85 or higher. The highest figures are often posted by elite-level nordic skiers (90+) as they use their entire body, not just mostly lower body like cyclists. More muscles need more O2.
