Are you inspired in your life?

I'm currently a freshman college student and I seemed to have run into a problem.... I have no idea what i want to major in and what i want to do with my life. I was raised in a traditional Asian household... and that generally means that I am more concerned with money as the major factor in my carreer rather than anything else. I decided that I wanted to be inspired in my life to do something that I believed in and could be happy in. Since i sincerely doubt I could fulfill my mother's hope of becoming a doctor based on monetary motives alone... I want to find something that makes me look forward to waking up each day. With this in mind, I would like to know what inspires YOU? Nothing lame please, this is in total seriousness since i have yet to resolve my problem and it is something that we should all probably think about.

i don't know if there is something that inspires me, but in my life i am most inspird to work out (lift weights). i don't think there is anything else in my life i have stuck with longer that isn't easy.

maybe its just me but i have always expeced to hate what ever job i get. i think thats because i've never known anyone taht actually liked their job. pick a major that makes you the most money, that you think you can do.

since your at anand, what about computer science?

EDIT: so i can't spell, sue me (note: i made a typo in the edit mesage)

LOL... CS major... I go to UC Berkeley and lots of our CS majors commit suicide. We've had 2 suicides within the last 2 months. I can say... hearing about those suicides was definently NOT inspiring.

I suggest you take a wide variety of classes you may think you could enjoy doing for a living. Take part in extra activities. Throw yourself into situations that you usually don't take part in. Good luck, i'm still searching too.

Nope. Perhaps someday I will be inspired and actually have some reason and meaning to my life, but as of now, I'm sort of idling without purpose (not that I'm not accomplishing anything, but I'd hardly use the term "inspired").

I am, however, the source of inspiration in my dog's life..

Well, you're half-way there. 😉

amish

you have something you want to do, you just have to find it 🙂

btw, cs major does not induce suicide... those people would have committed suicide sooner or later anyways, or led tremendously f*cked up lives. if you're sane, cs will not make you go insane.

i am inspired to do research in artificial intelligence and transportation... and eventually start my own company. my inspiration comes from having to sit in traffic on I-5. i'm being serious... one of the best ways to find inspiration is to find something you are really annoyed with, and work to remedy it. the company part is inpsired by my desire to live on an island, where i don't have to come in contact with people i don't want to 😛

Heres the basic rundown on the real world:

If the work is fun, everyone wants to do it. Because everyone wants to do it, noone makes any money, and labor is dirt cheap. Eg artists, musicians, web design, most anything that one would enjoy doing.

If the work sucks, and it takes forever to get education, you get lots of cash, cause noone wants to learn how to do it. Eg. Engineer, doctor, lawyer etc.

So either have fun at work and not get paid, or hate your job and get paid.

There are a few exceptions to the rule, but if you dont know your calling already, you probably wont for a while. I have a cousin who is a marine biologist, and its what she truely loves to do. Works a lot, but she enjoys it.

i completely disagree... there are plenty of engineers, doctors, etc, who LOVE their work. what you said is *only* true if you happen to really like humanities stuff or something...

Sure, I know a few as well, but the vast majority I've met do not like their job, their hours, and the hard work. What they do like is the amount they get paid for it.

yes, but it's not like you only have those two choices. it just happens that a lot of people fall in those two categories. dunno, maybe that's what you were trying to say.

I am, and have been since I graduated from high school. The inspiration doesn't come from the job I do (tho, I do love it tremendously), but from what I can accomplish on my own. To me, focusing too much on your livelihood leads to a life that revolves around nothing but work. There is more to it than just that... you just have to experience it.

My parents SAY they love their work (MDs). I think I make a good bit of cash for somebody my age and although I don't "love" my job I definitely don't hate it. I don't mind getting up in the mornings for it.

Well obviously its an immense simplification. Theres also the matter of the group of people who simply cant do better, such as gas station attendants or cashiers.

I assume since he's talking about college this isnt an issue for him.

Right now, my dream job is an 8 hour day with NO HOMEWORK.

Right now i'm an intended MCB major (Molecular Cell Biology) because my parents suggested I become a doctor and I have nothing in particular that I feel strongly about. Since I dont really feel strongly about something... my only goal right now is to get a job that pays well, but i sincerely doubt i'd be happy with that choice. In high school i took CAD (Computer Aided Drafting) and Drafting for about 4 years, and i found that pretty interesting and never really considered that class work. However, the sort of things i doesnt seem like stuff i could build a carreer on. I dont know if i've ever been good at science, I'm not doing so hot in my science courses right now, but i may just be placing the blame on my parents. Yet, i dont know if i want to pursue a career in science so i havent really been putting much effort into my science courses. This sense of insecurity of not knowing what direction your life is heading is very stressful, especially when what you do in college can severly affect your future. I NEED TO DECIDE SOON!! SOMEBODY INSPIRE ME!
