I am pretty happy with my system. I would say it sits firmly in the upper midrange department.

Athlon 64 X2 3800+
2GB PC2 4200 DDR2 RAM
250 GB SATA HDD
Geforce 8600GT

Runs most what i want to throw it at 1440x900 without too any problems. I dont do huge amounts of gaming, so its fine for now.

I would have to break this down to Want vs. Need.

I always want more that I have but I have all that I need right now. I'm still on an ASUS 939 board with an FX-55, 2g DDR, 2x320g WD's, 7600GT and a Dell 2007FP..... but I don't game. I wish I did but haven't found anything to stir my interest enough to make a move to something faster.

I have to admit though that media crunching is getting a little old on this one.

No, actually.

I've been itching to upgrade my RAM and Video Card (9600). But I don't have the money. I have to stick with 512 mb of RAM...

I'm very pleased. I built it a little over 2 years ago, but I've cheated a little. I upgraded to a dual core CPU this month and I've upgraded the secondary storage drive annually. It's the original installation of XP Pro

Going on 3.5 years, I was still content with my system until recently. I have a P4 Prescott 3.0 GHz HT, 2 GB RAM, GeForce 6800GS, two maxtor 300 gb drives, an ASUS P4865 deluxe (or something like that, currently running the fsb at 250 MHz (3.75 GHz CPU) at a 4:3 memory ratio (but everything but the proc has been upgraded at some point or another...). Now with this system, I could until recently do multimedia stuff in a decently timely manner and I could play every game (albeit at low settings). However, since Supreme Commander came out, my proc is no longer enough to play full-scale battles in this game. So I'm going to have to say that I'm currently dissatisfied. I'm planning on completely redoing my system once Barcelona and Penryn come out though.

Hardware's fine, really, quite incredible.

Software continues to suck, esp OS choices, limitations.

I'm still using my almost five year old Inspiron 8200 without issue. Does what I want it to do and does it well. I'm also using my T23 Thinkpad almost exclusively and no complaints about it either. Win2k on the Inspiron and OpenSuse 10.2 on the T23. Kinda funny, a few years ago all my system were Windows based. As of Friday afternoon after switching my file server from 2k to FreeNAS my Inspiron is my only Windows system. Hell, my mom's T23 has Suse on it. :)

I got very lucky with mine. I work at Circuit City, and they had the computer sitting on a shelf labelled as "defective." At CC, if someone takes a computer home, takes a sticker halfway off the front, and then brings it back, it can be labelled "DEF." In this case, it was "defective" because it was missing a gig of RAM...which obviously isn't a defect. It just basically was a PC that came from the factory with 2 gigs and now had 1. One of the CSA's brought a 1 gig stick of RAM up, we put it in the computer, and he proceeded to sell it to me "defective" for $250. This was a $1,000 Gateway...for $250.

I kept waiting for one of the bosses to come up to the counter and say "No, we can't do that, sorry." But surprisingly, it never happened, and that's that. I've had it for about 4 months now, and I'm extremely happy with it. I've modded it out and upgraded it to suit my taste, and it's a pretty fast machine.

AMD 3800X2 Dual Core
2GB Corsair DDR
Creative Soundblaster 5.1 USB
BFG 7950GTOC (OC'ed some more)
Seagate 7200 SATA 300GB
Samsung 32" LCD HDTV monitor (sort of fell in my lap at a ridiculous price from work too)
Windows XP Pro SP2

I consider myself lucky to have been in the right place at the right time in order to get the thing. I plan on transferring most of the components to a new board in a few days, as the current board doesn't support an 8800GTS. Not that I necessarily *need* to do this right now...but I really *want* to do this.
