I don't go on holidays that often, and when I do I tend to just leave a light on in the house on a timer. Does that count?

I do put Christmas lights at Christmas though, and I put up a Christmas tree and Christmas decorations.

I even put a manger scene under the Christmas tree. Santa Claus goes on the end table.

Probably going to put everything up in a week or so. Can't believe it's already that time.

"She Who Must Be Obeyed" has decreed that we WILL have Christmas lights up this year. :(

So...that means that I will be spending a day out in the cold, (relatively speaking) putting them up...then another, taking them down in January.

I tried to convince her that a yellow "bug light" in the porch light would suffice...she never buys that argument.

No, I do have a Big BBQ for the 4th of July every year. That is my big holiday celebration. I decorate the air with the smell of delicious beer can chicken and fantastically awesome cigars and I decorate the inside of the refrigerator with a plethora of ale.

The fiance likes to put some decorations for Solstices, but, I do not enjoy decorating or cleaning up decorations, so I do not contribute actively. I simply passively contribute by paying for everything.

No. My condo community has strict regulations against that kind of thing.

My daughter still has her Halloween and Thanksgiving lights up. Plus her easter and July 4th lights. She'll probably add something for Hannukah. Her place looks nicely decorative.

Nope. And I told my girlfriend she is free to put up whatever decorations she would like. However, I will not help her in any way and that shit better be gone by a week after the first.

The only holiday decorating I do is pumpkin carving and that is only because I enjoy carving pumpkins to look like clowns. I enjoy painting clowns as well. Maybe I'm obsessed with clowns?

But christmas only applies to people who care about christmas. Holidays is far more inclusive since the traditional pagan holidays/festivals are during the solstices.

It's true that "christmas" essentially is the same as solstice celebrations only with some added about some virgin who had a baby and then the virgin's baby was a magic wizard who did miracles but then was murdered, and then returned from the dead to life.

But, the real things with "christmas", the treats, the tree ... are based on Pre-christian traditions of the solstice.

That said, We now know that the earth revolves around the sun, and that it is not a sun god and moon god who are doing battle to determine the timing of the solstices.... So, there really is no need for religion since science offers us viable/realistic/plausible explanations for our existence in this reality.

Yes. I still need to find a head for Flick, and a little spotlight for him. He'll be licking the light pole in the front yard. :)

It's pretty sad in my area. The local high school used to do a Christmas concert every year. Then it became a "Holiday" concert. Okay, I can deal with that, I realize there are people with different beliefs. We just received a notice that this year's Holiday concert has been rescheduled to after Christmas and is now renamed to a "Winter celebration". We've sucked all of the culture out of it, arg!!

I'm all for equality and respecting other people's beliefs and everything, but tradition is important too. Should we cancel Martin Luther King Jr. day because we're race-conscious now? No, because that's an important part of history. My friend's kid's grade school cancelled Halloween and now calls it "Storybook Day", where you dress up as a "character" and collect candy. It's kind of ridiculous.

I mean, I went to a high school that celebrated Jewish holidays - I'm not Jewish, but shoot, I'll take three days off a month with complaint! But seriously, I can respect that there is a big Jewish community in my area and have no problem with it. What we're running into now is burying community traditions and creating ridiculous, meaningless holidays. They have been over-commercialized in the past, but seriously, Storybook Day? "Winter" celebration concert? I think there's such a thing as being too politically correct. Where's Liz Lemon when you need her?!

It's amusing that you think you have to explain this

I call it Christmas, and do the necessary translations in my head, and expect others to do likewise. My cat's probably more Christian than I am, but using the "official" term is easier, and I don't like the political correctification of language. If calling it Christmas pisses someone off, all the better :^)

Edit:
btw, no lights for me

The PC crowd and the anti-religious crowd feels the need to win battles wherever they can, especially if it means destroying traditions in order to rename it something 'PC'.

It kind of kills the point. We celebrate these holidays out of tradition. Taking the tradition out of it takes the magic out of it. Should we take Santa out of Christmas because Santa isn't real?

No, we should take Christmas out as a holiday because it's purpose is merely to increase sales at the end of the year. It is a consumer holiday. You can have a family gathering at any time of the year. Christmas is centered on the exchange of gifts, and a holiday exclusively for that is stupid. I refuse to participate in such nonsense for the sake of businesses.

Don't give you kids gifts for Christmas, and they will hate it.

I put up Kwanza lights. They make the posters in my bedroom look so cool.

Everytime I see the word "Kwanza" I think of those aliens from MIB - Kwaaaaaanzzzzaaaa

Is it that time of year again? I guess I'll have to drag the twin cannon of reason and obnoxiousness out of the shed and do my part in the war.

I do put up anti-Winter Depression lights on the house.

There's a digital billboard right outside Hartford. One of the rotating pages is something like "Atheist? You're not alone. Join us at XYZ." Sounds suspiciously churchy to me
