I've recently owned a V5, Radeon, and now a GF3. My friend has the same monitor as me (Viewsonic PF790, apature grille) and has owned a Matrox G450, GF2 MX and GF2.

The GF3 lies in the middle. It's considerably better than either of the GF2's, but not quite as good as the Matrox, V5, or ATI. My GF3 is definitely not 'bad', by any means.

I have had a GF2 GTS and yes at high resolutions the text wasn't good at all. However, I now have the ASUS v8200 GF3 and the 2D quality is MUCH improved. 1600 x 1200 is significantly clearer.

I'm on a vsiontek geforce3 right now. My text looks fine. I am using 1600x1200 desktop resolution on a 19" viewsonic perfectflat a95f monitor, all my other settings are basically default.

I also have the Visiontek GF3
No bluriness on my Monitor.
The 2d text is great on the GF3
I don't know where you heard that, buy a GF3 and find out for yourself.

<< Seriously though, I have recently read an article that states that GeForce cards do have lower 2D quality then most other video cards - although this isn't NVidia's fault as manufacturers have cut down on the 2D quality to save costs. You can read a bit about it here:

>>

Here's a good quote from the article:

One area NVIDIA accelerators has been criticized in is their 2D display quality. "Why isn't it as good as ATI or Matrox?" some have asked. Many don't realize that this problem isn't entirely NVIDIA's fault. While NVIDIA sends its reference design to card manufacturers, many choose to skimp on filters or use lower-cost printed circuit boards. Canopus Japan's Spectra line of GeForce boards continues to offer 2D display quality rivaling that of Matrox, but the company has pulled out of the US market due to the severe level of price competition here in the states.

As usual, people in the US will settle for cheap crap, while the Japanese are willing to pay a bit more for quality.

Some of you are forgetting that the distortion, ghosting, etc, is most noticeable on flat aperture grille tubes made by Sony. The Diamondtron tube is significantly less affected by this problem - and all Viewsonic's tube are made by them, if I remember correctly. Also, this problem doesn't seem to be as prevalent on shadow invar mask monitors such as the Samsung 955DF. Be sure to compare apples to apples and not apples to oranges!

The original poster, with a Sony CPD-G400, will definite notice more display degradation if his GeForce 3 has bad filters than someone who has a shadow invar mask. I would advise that you buy it and try it out for yourself and you make your own judgement call.

Overall I'm happy with the 2D of my Elsa GF3 more than my Visiontach!;) Honestly, I can't complain at all and I've had just about every card there is!;)

I want to thank you all for your feedback.
I will go to a local CompUSA store and try out one of their GeForce3's. If I like the 3d quality/sharpness, I will return it anyway but will buy for less online.

Thanks again.

i've noticed on both my friends and my own computer (he has a nice viewsonic 17" flatpanel) that when IE text is set smallest, it is blurry at some places that already have small text...

Just remember that CompUSA charges 15% restocking fee!

Not if you return it in perfect condition, well-packed, etc. Just be polite, and they won't charge you the fee. All they have to do is shrink-wrap it and put it back on the shelf.

I have a G400 Sony also, I have had Matrox G400max, Geforce2GTS, GeforceUltra and Now a Gainward Geforce 3 , Do not let anyone tell you that the G3 Gainward is not anything but perfect! The other Geforces left much on the table in HR 2d but this card is real nice. Remember Nvidia has more than a few Matrox employees these days.....
