Are you free?

Somehow, the "Proud to be an American" song came on. It reminded me of a verse: "Proud to be an american, where at least I know I'm free."

So, I ask: Are you free? Do you think you're free?

Not looking to turn this into a political debate or discussion - more of an overall picture of how America, Canada, or whatever country you live in works. In other words, even someone not even remotely close to understanding politics can understand and explain this question.

There was a time when this country was free, but it's been slipping for a long time.

I think, that if history remembers the WWII generation as the greatest generation, the baby boomers' legacy will be the "worst generation"

That's my regular rate. Overtime, night, and holiday rates are extra. ;)

More free than other countries. However, this is becoming an overly government controlled and regulated police state.

How the hell do you ask such a question and not expect it to turn into a political debate?

FREE? I'm easy, but I'm not cheap...

Oh, you meant THAT kind of free...

Well, yeah, I guess I am.
I'm free to take or quit any job I want.
I'm free to move to any city or state I want.
I'm free to SAY or write anything I want.,
(with only a very few sensible limitations)
I can vote for whatever candidate I want in any election.
(even if he/she is a complete moron)

However, I DO wear a ball & chain...and have for more than 33 years.
I guess that means I'm as free as my wife lets me be...;)

Relatively to other countries.. yes.

Relative to people who have their lives really well figured out and rolling smoothly, no.

Relative to myself a year ago when I was carefree and before I stepped into my depression from being overly self-conscious and self critical.... definitely not.

I always found that odd...that the generation that basically did everything on their own with little to no government help, that was willing to sacrifice everything raised a generation of adults that rebelled against government, then made it so massive and overbearing that they depend on it for everything.

It was a special limited time offer, but you waited too long and didn't buy any Oxiclean. Now Billy Mays is pissed.

not really. govt is way too involved in dictating what i can do to my body and what i can do in the privacy of my own home. that, and i find myself and my paycheck involuntarily enrolled in many social programs which should be opt-in. i dont stress about it... im not willing to invest the time or effort to convince people o see things my way (and most would not be receptive), and it could be much worse (definitely is in many other countries).
