I need to exercise almost every day to keep my weight under control. Last winter I was real fat and had to bundle up and wear a mask outside to run and it wasn't fun.

I am trying to do it now but since im lighter its colder for me, plus it hurts to breathe heavy in the cold air, and I read this can mess up your lungs.

I think Im making the switch to a cardio machine indoors.

Nah, lifting weights is anaerobic. Get a treadmill or something. Oh, and breathing cold air won't "hurt" your lungs. Your body just has to work harder to warm the air up.

I don't know much but I remember reading about winter running it is no problem but you have to get used to it. If you only run in warm don't go running in freezing temperatures right away; work yourself into it - or just keep running as it gets colder outside.

I refuse to exercise, on principal. :) I don't really exercise outside because I'm not supposed to be in direct sunlight, thanks to a medication I'm taking. But join a health club or something and you're doing fine.

Back in the day(last year) i exercised in the winter. you get use to i guess. I can't stand running on treadmills, specailly since i'm really tall and every step on those things sounds like a giant is comming.

There has been no change in my exercise plan with the recent snowfall. I do not anticipate a change being made as the weather worstens either.:) Of course my exercise pretty much is just walking from my car to my front door. :Q

I'll be running all winter. The cold isn't really an issue if you dress properly. I usually wear a thermal longsleeve shirt and a longsleeve shirt or two, or a sweatshirt, plus a hat, gloves, pants or two... etc. If you wish to try running again this winter, take it slower at first since your muscles will be tighter from the cold, and stretch inside/change out of any clothes fast. You're doing no harm to your lungs, and you'd just have to back off a little until you're comfortable with it.

My gymclass teacher gave me this tip:
Climatize yourself by staying outdoors about 10 minutes before you begin your run.
Things like running on the spot (looks stupid, I know...) will keep you warm while adjusting the rest of your body to the climate.

<< Nah, lifting weights is anaerobic >>

And your point is...........?
Staying lean has jack sh!t to do with heart rate or aerobic activity. Do you expend more calories than you consume? if yes, Then you will lose weight.

sometimes when it's just brisk out, but here it can get _damn_ cold in the winter. i just hit up the treadmills at the gym in that case.

the view's nicer, too. if you went to my gym, you'd know what i mean. :D

weight training can give you the same benefits as an aerobic excercize. just do lighter weights really really really slowly. your heart will beat faster, you will sweat like you just ran. trust me, it works ;) you tone your muscles better that way too!

Umm, maybe not quite the way to go.......unless you don't like your fast twitch fibers. And that in relation to tone is neither here nor there. "TOne" is a state of tonic flexion, or the number of muscle fibers that fire at any given time despite a lack of stimulus.

well, that applies for all types of weight training, but so long as you do it in moderate amounts it will not affect your fast twsit fibers that much. overall i am sure weight trainging will benefit your fitness level and not decrease (there are exceptions i assume depenidng on the sports you are interested in). but there is a reason why so many athletes are required to weight train ;) it has helped me a lot with the sports i play.

Please don't get me wrong, if you have read any of my posts, you may know that I am probably the biggest proponent of weight training here. I just take issue with your "slow" method. Lift like that and you WILL convert those fibers. And once there is a conversion, there is no going back.

Running in the cold is a blast, I prefer it to running when its hot out. Throw on an old t-shirt (to absorb the sweat and keep it closer to the skin), put some thermals over it to keep warm, and throw a sweatshirt or lined windbreaker over that to add a little warmth and keep the cold breeze from freezing you. Any pair of thermals + sweatpants/warmups will do for legs. Add some cheap stretch gloves and a hat and you'll be fine. Your lungs will get used to the cold air after a few weeks, just make sure you start out each run at a light pace to get used to the temperature.

oh, no worries duffman ;) i have been weight training for several years on and off, but am not too knowledgeable about the field. always seem to controversy as to which is the right way to actually weight train. your advice will be taken (i am assuming you are telling me not to weight train slow?) into consideration.

Yes, I am an advocate of compound explosive movements. ie. cleans, squats, jerks, etc. Of course I am a little on the hardcore side as far as training goes. What I say may not be the best for everyone.

The only exercising that I do is when I play tennis...or at least when I'm trying to play tennis.
