I was dead tired after work today. I could hardly keep my eyes open trying to watch tv, so i went to bed, it was 8pm. I was half asleep for about an hour, but never fell asleep, so i got out of bed and got dinner. Now here I am.

What do you do to help fall asleep?

I have those hypnic jerks all the time these days. I can't stand that crap. I'm basically about to fall asleep and then my body seems to think it's in trouble so it sends some shocks up to my head and I wake up all over again.

I heard that was because we (apes) used to live in trees, and you need a reflex to grab on to the branch or whatever when you're about to drift off. When not in a tree, your body sometimes makes you feel like you're falling anyway, just in case.

happens to me every day of my life. Same story for me. Got 2 hours of sleep last night, got home and wanted to die. Now I'm still up...

This isn't a new thing for me, been going on for years. I've gone to bed at 3 am and alarm goes of at 7am every day... I snooze for an hour every morning before getting out of bed due to being so tired. And the cycle starts again when I get home. There has to be a way to stop it... i don[t want to take any drugs that will be habbit forming, or give me poor quality sleep, or cause erectile dysfunction or diarhea though.

I then went home and took a power nap from 4pm-5pm. Then I went to class from 5:30pm-8pm. it's 12:55am right now, and I just finished reading some chapters and some more studying for that exam. Im really wired although I didnt have any caffiene.

those hypnic jerks when your about to fall asleep isn't cuz we were monkeys. ( i'm not saying we did or didn't come from monkeys ) Those jerks are because your in such a relaxed state of mind and your body is so calm your heart rate slows, and you body quits moving, and your brain interprets these actions as death. so to keep you from dieing your brain sends a jolt through your body to keep you alive. Not that your about to die because your tired just your brain sees it as that. Hense "Dead Tired"

Yep, almost every night for the past several years.

Edit: what do I do to go to sleep? OTC sleep aids. They help but you feel like sh1t in the morning.

I usually fall asleep between 1-5min from lying down, but then again I only lie down when im really tired. But at least when i feel really tired I actually can go to sleep. I actually have something of the opposite problem where even after a ton of sleep i'll feel really tired midday, maybe thats jsut from eating lunch and your energy goes in to diggestion and such though?

However when i was younger it probably took me 30min-1 hour to get to sleep after lying down, so I know it can be a total bitch, and the more it happens it gets worse becasue you keep thinking about it when you are trying to go to sleep and such.

chronic insomnia sufferer here.

I don't know what sleep is.

On average... I lie awake for about two hours, no matter how tired I am. Some nights I literally stare at the ceiling for six hours and then its time to get up.

Been prescribed damn near every drug in the book and nothing's helped. My brain is just too damn active; it won't ever quiet down. I need to stab it.

when I get too tired I find that I don't sleep very well. it's like my mind can't fully shut down.
