I'm going to try and get another year out of my 6950 (2GB) - now overclocked to 840/1325.

However, I think much like the price/performance of the 6950 compared to the 6970, most people will (wait and instead) purchase the 7950. Well... that's my view.

How high can you overclock your 6950? 1000 core possible?

Won't be buying a 7970 before I see reviews on the 7950, from the looks of it we might have a 6950 that unlocks to a 6970 with the 7900 series and if it doesn't it still seems like the 7950 will be close enough in performance making it the much better buy.

Thats the reason why they delayed the 7950. They wanted to make sure it doesn't unlock

Yes and the only time during the day I will have internet access is from 11:30 to 12:10ish so I am really hoping I can wake up and order one in the morning If not i'm going to have my gf order from her desk once they become available. I am afraid they are going to sell out day one and I'll have to wait longer. If I had any gpu at all that could game I wouldn't be so pressed to get one day one but I'm tired of waiting to unleash my new rig.

I'm unsure. I pushed it from 800/1250 to 840/1325, which is the maximum capability from within the CCC. It runs fine, albeit I don't like using other programs. I suppose Trixx or AB are worth a try. It's a non-reference version from SapphireTech which uses a custom PCB.

What's the usual OC capability? 😛

Download AB and push her. You should be able to go a lot higher.

What should I set my 2500K to, a clock speed that'll be a good match for a higher speed?

At the moment I just have the turbo clock set to 3.7 - there's no use pushing it further if I'll receive no gains.

AMD doesn't want to cannibalize sales of the 7970, giving it a solid month on the market all by its self is a good way to maximize profits.

Yup, the enthusiasts with loads of cash in their pocket will shell out for the cream of the crop and won't wait anyway. Especially since we're all wondering how much of an improvement this new architecture is.

Enthusiasts on a budget will wait though... 🙂

Well, I'd say this guy, Gabe63, just throwing that as a comment on his post doesn't make it a credible piece of news to quote.

While some think it was a mistake with the 6950 I think it was brilliant marketing.

Cutting into profit margins is a horrible mistake no matter how you look at it. Yeah its great for people who don't want to spend the money for a 6970 but not for amd

UPDATE: Just tried. Erm... unless I'm supposed to reboot my system, AB only allowed up to 840/1325 as well, with no voltage control.
Disabled OverDrive, still the same.

I tried Trixx and it allows further OCing and voltage control. Well, seems AB wasn't for me, but Trixx'll do great. How far 'should' it go?

I'm going to hang on to my 6870 for now, at 1000mhz core it's fairly close to a 6950. I'm looking at the 7870 or 7950 as a potential replacement.

I've owned 6970s previously and I was able to get the max, 950 fairly easily. However, the cayman doesn't scale very well with oc'ing, unfortunately. It may not be worth the hassle.
