Also, I had never heard of this crime before. Now I can't get the image of the girl having bleach poured down her throat and her head wrapped in bags out of my head.

Fucking disgusting what some people are capable of.

No, I'm not a coward who can't handle that real life isn't a 100% safe place and need to cower behind the false bravado of a gun.

Sorry, but that's one of the stupidest things I've read here. Are you a coward that hides behind a seatbelt and airbags?

Yeah...the people who carry don't sit around going "I might get hurt, I should stay home with my door barricaded and shotgun in hand!"

They go outside, armed realizing they are better equipped in case something goes wrong.

A gun would not make me feel any more safe. For me it's about probability risk. There's the probabilities of being assaulted, of being helped by having a gun in an assault situation, of mis-use of a gun by a family member, of a mis-use of a gun by myself. People will fight about the relative scales of all these probabilities, none of which are 0.0 and none of which are particularly likely.

For example, I think about everyone I know in my entire life and none of them has ever experienced a break-in with themselves in the house. However in my own immediate family I know my father has come downstairs with bat to confront potential robbers and they are always people such as my brother or me in our teenage years sneaking in late. This has happened quite a few times, so at least in my own limited experienced I'd be orders of magnitude more likely to confront a loved one late night than a burglar. Therefor
e I just rather not carry a gun in such a situation as opposed to a bat. While the chances of an accidental discharge at a family member is near 0 (but not completely 0), so are the chances of confronting an armed burglar multiplied by the probability that a gun will help me in such a situation.

I don't think there are any real good non-biased studies about all of these different risks, but for myself I feel safe living my life like how all my friends and family do, without a gun. If I lived in an area with constant violence I would be more inclined to own a gun at home.

I carry concealed daily.

When on road trips I also carry either on my person or in my vehicle so long as the state allows. Luckily in the south, states down here are vehicle firearm friendly. If I lived in the northeast this would not be possible.

Up here in Canada you can't carry a gun and it's very hard to get one unless you buy one illegally in the Jane and Finch area of Toronto. You can get any gun you want there. I would carry if it were legal.

No because as the data shows, I'm safer without one.

Why on earth would I want to vacation somewhere unsafe?

Well so I might be able to use my gun??? :p

54 + years now and I and all the members of my family have traveled around the globe many times accros the USA many times and 3 times to Alaska by car for summer long trips and a bazillion road trips up and down the east coast and never ever ever once thought I needed of had a gun to protect myself.

Seriously people how it must suck to to live in fear all the time. And dont give me I dont live in fear becuase I have a gun crap, that is ecaxtly why you carry a gun. To protect you from all these imaginary threats.

Statistically your points are meaningless.

Myself nor my family have ever had a house burn down. I still carry homeowner's insurance and have smoke detectors.

Myself nor my family have ever had a bad car accident. I still carry insurance on my vehicle and wear seatbelts.

And on and on and on....

People who carry guns don't live in fear, they just have no problem being prepared rather than rely on other people to protect them.

We go to nice places for vacation as well, but since we have a dog we have to drive.

I'm not going to drive in huge circles to avoid the thuggish areas. I guess you're ok with these trash thugs trying to intimidate people?

Really it hasn't been working so well for them lately. Lots of these elderly rich people are armed nowadays. They have to pick their targets carefully.

I have a Utah CFP but I wouldn't have been armed in this scenario since I am going to a party, I will probably drink and therefore shouldn't be armed. Same issue with vacations.

If not, why not?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murders_of_Channon_Christian_and_Christopher_Newsom

"According to the testimony of the medical examiner, Channon's death came after hours of torture, having suffered injuries to her vagina, anus and mouth. She was raped with an unidentified object and beaten in the head. It was also reported that her body was scrubbed with bleach which was also poured down her throat, in an attempt by her attackers to remove DNA evidence, while Channon was still alive. She was then bound with curtains and strips of bedding, her face covered with a bin liner and her body stashed within five large bin bags, before being placed inside a residential waste disposal unit and covered with sheets. The medical examiner said there was evidence that Channon slowly suffocated to death"

I think you need to focus more on life and less on the possibility of death. I can't imagine being so scared everyday of my life like you. You seem to wrap yourself around the worst possible scenarios in life. I'm surprised you make it outside your house.

Where do you live that no matter where you go, you have to go through a thuggish area? I've never seem someone so consumed with thug life and thuggery.

Do you get armed every time, when you get in a car?

After all, driving is terribly dangerous, and with a gun, you can just shoot at the drunk driver that's swerving, or shoot the deer in the middle of the road!
Statistics don't lie!

Also, the other day a bus driver around here was getting attacked by a gang of youths. He got away apparently.
The youths probably did not have firearms, neither did the bus driver.
Now imagine instead of getting out of there he would have drawn his weapon.
He would have had the option of not firing, while they taunt him and get closer, or the option of shooting one or two of them, before the others go ahead and kill him, without any weapon required.

So allow me to ask the more important question? Are you legged, when you go on road-trips with your family?
If not, better have an armored wheelchair!

I literally do not even worry or think about it at all. Growing up in terrible areas I got used to 'being ready' as a second nature sort of thing.

It's actually really nice, leading a stress-free life where I don't have to "check out" the gas station to see if it's shady or not, and wonder if I'm going to get robbed. Same with going ATMs, all of that.

It's nice being prepared and trained enough to not have to worry about any of these things.

But... I live in an area with very strong self defense laws. I don't have to wonder what happens in court or any of that mess.

Bottom line is if my life is threatened, game over for the trash thug.

I live in a nice area, and vacation in nice areas. Our beachhouse is a ~7 hour drive, through some very thuggish areas.

Sorry but I'm not going to not stop for gas, or food, or whatever over being in fear of some hoodrat thug. It's nice that this is not a factor in my life.... I am a law abiding American and do WTF I want. If some thug wants to try and threaten my life then let's go.

Most thugs prey on people like the pink shirt guy... They can smell his fear and use that against him.

I give them a knowing look and grin, and have literally never had any issue as an adult.

If you get pulled over in a motor vehicle and you have a weapon the cops do bad things to you like throw you in jail. Illinois is practically a police state. If the cops see loaded weapons in an automobile they assume you plan to do a drive-by Shooting.

You have to also understand that some idiots will do things like shoot at deer form a moving car. Even if it is legal to transport a firearm, cops want them transported unloaded in the trunk.

That's very sad. I won't live in a state like that where you have to live life knowing that only the thugs are the ones carrying guns.

All of those things are considerably more likely to happen than being in a circumstance that requires a gun.

Of course anyone can become the victim of a crime, but I honestly feel that caution and avoidance or more likely to protect me than armed resistance is.

I guess it's just a personal belief of mine as an American, that I will not live my life under avoiding thugs and their little intimidation tactics.

Don't get me wrong, I do think it's possible to live your life with 911 on speeddial, constantly worrying about gas stations and atms, and running to the basement if you see a suspicious character outside.... I just choose not to live that way.

Instead I am armed, and just don't worry about it until the very moment my life is in danger.

And they cost money/time/effort.

Carrying a gun is very cheap, takes no time, and no effort. It's something I don't even think about and considerably easier than dealing with insurance policies etc.
