Engineers are cocky...no argument here. But that's because it's a freaking hard major. I'm a Biomedical Engineering major and I'm proud and sometimes cocky about it, and so are all of my engineering friends.

That aside, I would like to point out, like others have, that you're not an engineer, perhaps that's why you're so bitter. Software engineering, engineering technology, train conductors, sanitary engineers, and so on, are not real engineers. And yes, I'm one of those people who like titles. If someone's a doctor or professor, I make sure to call them that because they went through their grueling undergrad, master's, and doctorate studies and they damn well deserve that title. Likewise, when I graduate, I will call myself an engineer because I worked my ass off studying for advanced math, physics, mechanics, organic chemistry, etc. while watching my initial engineering freshman class dwindle to 1/3 of what it was because those other 2/3 couldn't cut it or realized engineering is way too much work for them to handle.

I am an engineer myself, and soon-to-be a Professional Engineer (P.E), and I agree. Some of the people in my profession are very rude.

More power to ya if you think cocky = something good. I personally think any kind of class / eliteist mentality is crap......:(

To me, cocky = a little too proud, not necessarily being an elitist. If you can't be proud in something you are or do, then that sucks for you.

I would agree w/ the ABET certification. I am currently an aerospace major at Univ. of Maryland and I certianly plan on calling myself an engineer after 4 years of hard work here.

I think they're just irritated by people that like to tack on engineering to whatever job title they have (network engineer, microsoft engineer, email engineer, whatever). It seems to cheapen the whole engineering profession. I don't think a doctor would take someone seriously if a nurse started calling herself a junior doctor or something.

Nothing like a retarded loser trying desperately to make fun of his intellectual superiors.

Much like riceboys, the only ones you'll get a laugh out of are those of your own kind.

i work in asic design, asic/chip designers have to be the most arrogant people around. however, they are largely justified. and there are benefits to arrogance - we get paid very well!

My mother (a doctor) occasionally rants about nurse practitioners. :)

yeah, I don't call myself a software engineer because I am not an engineer. That title is only used to make the job sound more advanced. And as complex and challenging as some software development can be, it really doesn't compare to the technical expertise and problem solving ability needed to be a real engineer.
I work with a ton of Chem Engineers and some EE's. I have rarely found them to be cocky. There are a couple who always act like you couldn't possibly understand what they are talking about. But most of them are very low-key and very open to discussing issues with us software devs.

LOL, I've got a friend who got a BA degree in history, is getting her masters in elementary education, and now calls herself a Historian. Cracks me up everytime she says that. She'll say something like "well, I'm a historian, so I know all about this".
You don't see people with a BS in Psych calling themselves Psychologists.

LOL funny.

I am an engineer and I don't care how to install some stuff in my box. It just have to work.
Not that I don't have to do it anyway.

Nah, it's OK. I was just kidding around. I had a hunch that English wasn't your native language based on your mistakes.

no, you cant really call yourself an "engineer" in the traditional sense. you'd be more of a technician. i'll be an engineer. i will have degrees in math and electrical engineering, BS and BE respectively.
